I first heard about this game from a friend, who recommended it unconditionally. I later found it going for £20 in a shop (about a month after release), which just tells how poorly the game did. However, it has built up a fiercely loyal fanbase, and deservedly.Beyond Good and Evil is a fitting title for the game. To start with, the story is very well done, with most characters, although clear good/evil, having mixed agendas, so you can at least relate to the baddies. However, it could also tell of how the game itself goes out of its way to break the mould in certain areas. For example, the graphics. While they are certainly beautiful, fitting the game perfectly, and the art style is fresh and original, there are some parts which are just *too* quirky for the average consumer, who prefers the drab grey environ of "Space Marine Shoots Lots Of Aliens", and all its yearly sequels. The textures vary wildly, from beautiful water effects and stunning sunsets, to grainy, inconsistent rock and fields. However, instead of detracting from the experience, it serves to heighten it; instead of picking nits at the tiniest inconsistency, it encourages you to ignore them and concentrate on the gameplay, which is, after all, the whole point of a game. The aforementioned gameplay is definitely among the best I have tried on the Xbox, ranking alongside such titles as Halo and KOTOR in terms of immersion and (for want of a word to describe it), that rare feeling when a games controls suit it perfectly, and the buttons fall under your fingers as if second nature. I haven't completed the game on other consoles, but from quick goes on friend's machines, I can confirm that the PS2 and Gamecube controls feel great as well.Whilst it would be a lie to say that the action never lets up, it is certainly very well placed, and knows when to step aside for more intimate moments, or moments of pure wonder. Like when you first take a cruise around the sea in your hovercraft. When you finally notice that elusive animal sneaking behind a pipe. When you enter the garage, only to find it's run by a group of Rastafarian rhinos. These little moments all slot together to become the rich, varied, world of BG&E, and you'll fall in love with it at once. All this hasn't even touched on the fabulous variety of challenges (from seeking out animals, to competing in a hovercraft race, to sneaking into a secret base to steal back a load of pearls), all of which are excellent; the detailed, interesting characters, who you will genuinely care about; the stunning music (I am still searching for the OST); and the quirky and original "story missions", which I'll leave you to discover for yourself. It is sometimes said, and sadly often true, that only the very worst and very best videogames fail to sell. Beyond Good and Evil is sitting firmly in the "very best" camp. Everything comes together to provide an experience quite unlike (and quite superior to) any other you can think of, but unfortunately this just doesn't appeal to the masses. However, if you want something fresh and original, with timeless appeal and enduring memories, you could go little better than this.

I'd been waiting for another adventure game to come out ever since I'd completed The Wind Waker, and I have to admit, I wasn't particularly that bothered by Beyond Good and Evil when I first saw it. I'd just dismissed it as average before I'd even been bothered to take a closer look, but my naivety soon wore off as word of mouth (from the Ps2 release) soon made me take notice. I soon couldn't wait for it's XBOX release and promptly got it the day it came out, and have been playing non stop ever since. The game is full of imagination and details which ensure you never get bored. Unlike The Legend Of Zelda, most of the characters have splendid voice-acting behind them, albeit only during the cinematic cut scenes, and occasionally during the course of the game, but it all gives the game a great feel, rather than just going through the motions. The graphics are wonderful, the storyline is better than expected, the fighting is ok (it boils down to bashing A but the way in which the character bounces about is pretty cool). Everything about the game is class, from your talking pig uncle Pey'J, to the Jamaican Rhino Mechanics to lining up the perfect snapshot of an animal (your characters proffession is a journalist). The fact that game is so well put together, and the many genres seamlessly woven into a beautiful game is a shame, just because it's just a bit short. I managed to finish it in about 11 hours, just on the basics. But never mind, its cheap, fantastic looking, entertaining, and if I'm being totally honest, I preferred this to The Wind Waker. Unmissable.

The term "classic" gets bandied about a lot, and is often applied to yet another annual update of some fat license or one more bog-standard FPS. "Beyond Good and Evil", though, is the real deal. The gameplay is quick and intuitive: some might even go so far as to call it "easy", but that, I feel, would be to miss the point. This is not a game where you have to be pixel-perfect to make that one crucial jump, or where you need to be an octopoidal stenographer to hammer in the killer combo. There are challenges, of skill and wit, but the game is never less than fair in either respect. So what makes this a classic? The graphics are good, technically, but won't make your eyes pop. To some they might be "cartoony",others might call them "stylish". They are, though, beautifully designed. The characters, vehicles, buildings and landscapes all hang together: they all belong. And not just in their physical design: there's a real sense of personality about this game. It's not just a bunch of generic fluff that could be grafted into any game, anywhere; these characters, these locations, stories and events belong to this game and this game only. It wouldn't work anywhere else. This is what makes it a true classic. You are -- quickly and painlessly -- drawn into the gameworld. You start believing in it, and start caring about it, in a way that very few other games can match. This is no numb, dumb button-bashing timewaster: it's a genuine, absorbing pleasure to play.

I really enjoyed this, and I didn't think that I was going to.The graphics could have been better, but are up to the standard. The animation is superb, and this more than compensates for any lack of quality. The sound is well implemented and used effectively although there is no voiceovers for most of the conversations with NPCs.Stealth elements play a strong part of the game, and fortunately the control and also the camera make this more enjoyable than things can be in other games. The quests are largely well thought out, and the side games are more than an adequate diversion to the main story, where they do not compliment it perfectly. The comic moments/characters are used well and help the story and the cutscenes seem like welcome breaks rather than intrusions to the game.Like I say; I really enjoyed it.

The best description of this game I have heard was that if Pixar was to make a game this would be it. From start to finish this game is pure quality. It does best what is most important in a platformer: to create a world which is inviting, believable and alive. At the same time being a showcase for the great French wit, imagination and strong visual style. It is not the hardest or most adult of games but plays out at the perfect pace; it wants you to succeed, it wants good to triumph over evil.Along with good narrative it has many little fun side quests and games which might seem irrelevant at the time all help towards your overall progress, further deepening the feeling that everything in this game has a place and that what you are doing has a greater purpose. An absolute gem of a game.

I picked this up for a penny short of a £20 note & was absolutley delighted to discover a well made, highly amusing and entertaining gem of a game that has made many an hour go past without any conscious thought for food or drink. An eclectic effort with elements that draw from a multitude of genres (Platform, shooting, puzzle, racing, etc) bound with a sense of humour and garnished with eye pleasing graphics. The characters are well rounded (particularly the pig) and provoke a weird sense of caring for the "home team".Some say it's too short, some may say the camera work can be a bit erratic (although I felt it was better than most)but I would have been happy with it even at full price.Discover the world through the lens of the strange - a pearl of a game.

one of the best xbox games. ive played loads of xbox games and this belongs on the top pile of games i own. although once you played it you won t want to play it again [like any other xbox games then apart from sport sims which you can play fequently].the game is good the way you have to solve and creep around bad guys and the way you have got a hovercraft to get to different places breaks the game up nicely you just feel you have to complete the game unlike other games where you can give up half way through. if your older just ignore the child like characters the game is after all a role playing game and the best one ive played so far

This is a fantastic undiscovered gem of a game. I picked it up at Game (back when they still sold regular Xbox games) for about £10-15. I'd never heard of it before, but the game description and screenshots on the box caught my interest.I absolutely loved the game. I found it both challenging and just downright enjoyable...great music...interesting characters. I was sad to finish it because I didn't want it to end - just like a great book.If you enjoy beautiful games which mix puzzle-solving, stealth and races/mini-games, you will love this game. It's probably one of the best I've ever played on the Xbox.

Brilliant game and thorughly joyfull from beginning to end, most problems to solve are difficult yet intuatively solved after working them out rationally, shame that such a great game has cartoony graphics but you forget that pretty quickly as you start living the game!, the stealth levels are very hard but totally addictive but i would say that the stealth is one part of the game that let it down slightly-only due to a matter of personal taste really. Best adventure game since tomb raider in my opinion.
