This 100 litre capacity Berghaus Expedition Mule bag is huge measuring 75cm long x 40cm tall and 40cm wide when full stuffed with clothes, shoes, boots and even a down sleeping bag. It really is the only bag needed for a longer trip. There is just one main compartment accessed via a rugged heavy-duty zip with 2 zip pulls along the full length of the bag and its U-shaped top flap which can be fully opened and flipped back giving easy access to the bag's contents. The U-shaped top flap is backed by light mesh creating a secure, zipped pocket perfectly suited to carrying travel documents or any other small items for which quick and easy access is needed. To the end of the bag is a large zipped gusseted pocket measuring 40x38x7cm which is ideal for small items such as compact cameras, tablet, foldable hat or packaway waterproofs and contents can be quickly retrieved.Strength and durability is essential for any travel bag which can be subject to rough treatment and bad weather and the Berghaus Mule excels. The main body of the bag and its pocket are made from a tough, highly durable rip-stop polyester fabric with a heavier-duty and even tougher polyester base. Straps are made from tough 2" webbing and the main carrying handles are fully-adjustable via sliding buckles to select the most comfortable length plus there's the additional benefit of a tough, padded grab-handle at both ends.Occasionally when traveling, eg when disembarking from a boat, both hands are needed for holding paperwork or a safety rail and this Mule can be hastily converted into a backpack with fully-adjustable, yet packaway, padded shoulder straps giving it ultimate versatility while a height-adjustable chest strap, more commonly found on high-end backpacks, provides support and comfort. The clips are a little fiddly to use because I have weak thumbs, but this is a very minor point. Compression straps to each side help to compress and stabilise the load ensuring a 100 litre load is as easy and comfortable as possible to carry although only for shorter periods as needed: this Mule will not replace a dedicated and more specialist specific backpack, probably with an internal frame to fully support a 100 litre load on a backpacking trip.Next comes the piece de resistance of this bag: when not in use, it folds away into its end pocket either for storage or for carrying on a trip when there's a chance additional luggage space might be needed.Having been used on two shorter trips so far, I can happily confirm that it is fully weatherproof having endured some heavy showers and prolonged heavy drizzle in Wales without any water penetration. This bag is Berghaus' high quality throughout, tough, durable, lightweight, weatherproof and highly practical. It is beyond criticism, has no negative points and is a bag I could not recommend more highly for anyone looking for a superior quality and versatile travel bag with the additional benefits of carrying as a backpack then folding away when not in use.

I am so impressed with this bag, it is so well made and the materials used are of the highest quality, you can tell it's going to last years and years. The bag has a thick rubbery coating on the inside so it is really waterproof, with a wide overlap for the zip. It is really well designed, from the detachable backpack straps that securely clip and unclip, to the zippers that close together with a hole for a lock, or if you don't have a lock with you then tie the zippers together with the attached strings! Lots of hooking places and straps to secure anything you want. It even has a zippered net in the top flap, and the pouch that it folds into is also converted into an extra storage section that slots neatly into the end of the bag to hold it up and make it stronger. Now,I have had folding bags before and it is usually a complete nightmare to fold it back up again. The Berghaus was surprising pain-free, and I managed to push it all into the pouch in a few minutes, even though it wasn't as flat as when I first opened it! (See the photo of the bag which I folded in.) Excellent bag, and also the 100 litre model I have is HUGE and the size of a medium suitcase.

+ Very large+ “Weather proof” - I tested with a bit of water and it seemed fine though admittedly haven’t been out in hours of pouring rain.+ Looks smart+ Has small holes in the zipper for a mini padlock (would not fit a substantial one).+ All straps are adjustable+ Various reinforced comfortable fabric handles for carrying, one on each end, rucksack straps and 2 handles (long enough to also put across your body - although you’d probably hurt your back doing this for extended periods with it full).+ Feels durable, even though the material is quite thin and not at all padded.+ Handy to have rucksack straps to carry on your back (although probably not comfy for long distances).+ Packs up flat into a square format for ease of storage, with a fabric hook for hanging.- No reinforcement in the base of the bag means it’s quite floppy when not full up.- No smaller pockets inside, just the main bag section, large end section with zip and the whole of the lid has a large mesh zipped section.- Not the easiest thing to pack away but still takes under a couple of minutes so can’t really complain as it’s not something you’d be doing daily.

This is a review of the 100-litre bag…To be honest I did not imagine how big it would be so when the bag came I was a bit shocked by the size.100 litre is almost as big as our kitchen bin so it can really take a lot of stuff. For this reason, the bag is suitable for strong people, 100 litre of clothes is really heavy! The bag is well made and seems to be very sturdy. It has also handles to be carried as a backpack which is again, only for strong people. I would not be able to carry it around comfortably when it is full. Maybe the smaller size but definitely not the 100 l version. The zips are easy to open and close and the bag folds itself into outside pocket for storage but it is quite tricky to put it back as nicely as it was on the arrival. It’s a pity there are no folding instructions attached. On the other hand, this bag is perfect for my husband who can carry it with ease. It would be also great for weekend road trips as a bag like this fits better in the car trunk than traditional suitcases.

This is so well made and sturdy but also flexible and light which is just what i was after. The zips are of excellent quality and there is a zipped pocket to the side where you can store the whole pack into when not in use or use it for essential items when you are using the bag. There is a full length zipped see through pocket on the underneath of the opening flap, to keep easy to reach items stashed, also plenty of points to attach other items to along both sides of the holdall as well as compression straps. It is so versatile for camping/bushcraft, trips away etc when you have it in front of you you will realize just how good it really is compared to your normal backpack/rucksacks.Mine is for shorter camping hikes or even car camping,if i was planning a 100 mile hiking trip then i would buy something more suited for weight distribution and designed for the longer carrying sessions. But for shorter camping trips get a MULE.

This is a lightweight bag that is excellent for journeys or tasks where weight and space is limited. The 100L bag is enormous, I can fit all my emergency services uniform & kit and then some into it. The material feels tough, but it is not rubberised (such as the Karrimor bags) so it won't take stupid punishment. However this does have the benefit that the entire thing collapses into an inbuilt bag making it no bigger than a laptop. It comes with shoulder straps, although the nature of the bag means it won't be comfortable for long treks, but makes life easier if you need both hands free to carry other stuff.Overall this is a great travel bag, or if you just need a holdall to cart stuff around in.It is expensive, but will take plenty of abuse. As before the only consideration you need to make is if you require a rubberised material that will prove more waterproof.

Berghaus is an excellent British company, just a bit less well know outisde the UK. This huge holdall as made of heavy duty vinyl and is tough, abrasion resistant and waterproof (maybe not the seams). It is great for international travel, moving house or storage and is strong enough for aircraft hold use or throwing onto the back of trucks or pack horses, etc. Available in various sizes and colours, this size - 100l - is far too big as cabin luggage on an aircarft though there are smaller sizes. The holdall is simplicity itself - large main section, end pocket and an inner mesh pocket - this will enable you to store huge amounts of gear. Highly recommened with superb craftsmanship and build quality.Heavy duty zip pullers can take padlocks. The only problem is physcially lifiting it once you have it densely packed with clothes!

What really liked about this was it is a big size so can hold loads of things and that it is trying to be versatile with shape. The bag is nice and bright and feels decently made and pretty tough. However it is pretty confusing when you first uppack it and really needs a little instruction page, it comes in a bag which is part of the bag, - a separate bag would have been better i think, and you dont know where to put the bags flap when all is unrolled but it can go inside out and store in the bag we discovered. The bag has too many handles but we removed the back ones as it would be so very big for that. Zips feel good and over all pleased.

Bought for overland trip in Africa and weight was restricted to under 12kg - the bag has more capacity than this but I managed for 3 week trip without going naked. It has a side pocket which is functional for stuff that needs to be accessible but also for storage as the bag folds into itself via the pocket. There are straps to convert it to rucksack style which was useful. This bag looks sturdy and well made and the red colour is easy to spot and stylish. Really pleased with purchase and would recommend for trips where a suitcase isn't suitable. If review useful please consider ticking the box. Cheers. Safe travels

I’m loving this bag! It’s the perfect size for what I wanted, it’s tough and strong of both material and stitching, and the backpack straps are a helpful and well made bonus. It’s not without its flaws; the carry handle straps are adjustable but tend to adjust themselves when the bag is heavy (which is ok if u wanted them long anyway!), the end pocket becomes pretty much unusable if the main compartment is full, and you need to be a black belt origami master to actually fold the bag back into its pocket. However, I still love it and would buy it again. Especially since the sale price was excellent value.

Capacious and practical. Strong, comfortable to carry and easy to store. We bought two for our two boys so they will have bags that last them. They may not be children’s luggage but our lads are going to be very tall and will be able to cope with them by the time they are ten.We did find however that when taking them on a plane, they made these bags go with the very large luggage because they have straps that could get caught when they go on the conveyor belts to the plane. In the future we will take the shoulder straps off and pack them for this sort of trip.

Great bag! Works well even when it's not completely full. Because the material is flexible, it molds itself to your back when carrying. It's comfortable on your back/shoulders and the straps at the top are placed in the centre so the straps do not fall off your shoulders when carrying. It seems durable although I've only used it on one trip up the mountains so far. I recommend and the colour is a bonus - you can't miss the blue colour amongst other baggage!

I've always used berghaus. It's a top brand quite often without the outrageous pricing of some companies. Firstly this bag folds into itself for storage. So it when folded away look rather like the cover for a tennis racket. It's sturdy. Well made and can be carried Bergan style with two over the shoulder straps. Very ingenious design folding away when not in use. I look forward to years of use.Ps it's also lockable

The bag looks great and well built. It's light and fits enough stuff for a short trip. The backpack straps are handy. It's a cabin size type of bag and I'd think it should be fine on budget airlines. The only thing I though was not great was the pack-away pocket that doesn't seem quite easy to pack the bag in. At least we haven't tried packing it back in! Overall, it's a great bag that I think will last for years.

Arrived in good time and well packed. It seems strong and well made. I am not planning to go hiking with it, but will use it to keep my hands free for pushing a wheelchair between the taxi and check-in. It is as roomy as the trolley suitcase I currently use and will be a lot easier. Certainly looks as though it will stand up to airline baggage handling. The red one is a good price too.
