My first impression of this product when I saw it on Amazon were maybe 3 stars. The actual product as far overcome that expectation.Packaging : Very, very good packaging, if anything overkill. Came inside 3 boxes: a paper padded Amazon box, a blank cardboard box with some foam, presumably from Asus, and then the Product box, with fitted foam around the Panel itself. All I could have asked for and more, and the product arrived in perfect shape.Aesthetics: The bezel of the panel is just plain plastic (ABS I think) with an Asus logo on the bottom centre, so from the front the monitor is nothing to write home about, but turn around the back and it is a large silver brushed panel with a larger Asus logo, dressed to impress on the table of any conference room. The product is also extremely thin, making it look even better. The buttons on the side also look good, with a small LED in the power button to show the status.Panel Quality: At £120 the panel was never going to be anything jaw-dropping, so I was pleasantly surprised when I first turned on the display. Although the panel is not 1080p like the laptop screen it is accompanying, it is not extremely noticeable, and the colour depth more than makes up for it. Contrary to my expectations, this panel was not plagued by the usual washed-out blueish colours that most cheap laptop screens have. This makes it great for doing photo editing on the move, when away from my 24inch monitor, as my laptop screen tends to cause me to over-saturate colours. The only qualm I have is poor viewing angles, as discolouration happens very quickly, so I would not recommend for sharing movies or for a slideshow, however this should not matter in a reasonably static desk environment.Functionality: The first time set up of the drivers was quite simple. I would recommend downloading the drivers from Asus' website directly, as the CD which came in the box was probably out of date, and didn't support windows 10. They can be found easily by searching the product name followed by 'drivers' on Google. On install and restart later and the product was working perfectly, acting as a third display, along with my laptop screen, and 24inch Acer monitor. The brightness button on the side works very well as well, giving a good range of brightness for any room, and a satisfying brightness in direct sunlight. The auto-rotate is also a good feature, although slightly laggy.I enjoy using this product whilst playing resource-intensive games on my primary display, as the internal displaylink card allows me to run skype, steam messenger, or VLC media player, without dropping the frame rate of the game I am playing. The case that comes with the product is very sleek, however takes up a lot of desk space. I invested in a very cheap tablet stand to use at my desk, which is compact enough to fit in my laptop bag and take with me.Overall this product is definitely worth a buy I you need that extra desktop space on the go, or if you are looking at a smaller monitor for a gaming setup, without slowing down your gameplay.

EDIT March-16: I'm now using this with a Windows 10 machine with the latest Displaylink drivers. All issues with the driver mentioned below have miraculously disappeared and I'm now happy to upgrade this to 5 stars!========================================================Very pleased with this monitor. I travel a lot and it's become a must-have whenever I've got any detailed work requirements when on the road.Pros:* Worked immediately without the driver disk (however see 'cons' below) on my Windows 7 Pro/64 bit machine* Screen is nice and bright with good colours and viewing angles* Resolution offers a good price/performance option. I use it for detailed spreadsheets without any issue.Clearly the higher res one would look sharper, but for me, I'm pleased with this and glad I saved the money* The case feels pretty sturdy and reasonably attractive. It's also very functional - holds the monitor at a choice of 2 separate angles (vertical and slightly leaning back). I use the latter as it provides the best viewing angle for me, and it feels more secure in the upright position.* Good portability - I've flown with it in hand luggage a few times now, slots into the bag with no issues. Very easy to whip out of the case to go through security.* Looks great - the aluminum back seems to draw attention. Many colleagues assume it's some sort of large tablet PC.Cons:* Whilst it worked straight away without the driver disk, it was pretty flaky. I found I had to do a full boot up every time it was unplugged, else I got a "driver is not compatible" error popping up. That makes it pretty unusable on a day where you need to keep taking your laptop off to meetings. Unfortunately downloading the latest drivers off the ASUS website did not improve this.* The input wire is not a good fit - very easy to knock and it soon wobbles out of position. And once it does - there's no getting it back without a reboot (see 1st point above). I wouldn't risk moving it between horizontal / vertical mode for this reason. In addition, the connecting port is bottom left - which for someone like me that prefers the extra monitor on the right, puts it right in the firing line of my mouse (unfortunately my PC has a USB port right there too).* When in use, the case takes up a lot of space on the desk - it lies flat and is quite a bit larger than A4* OK, I admit, this is my fault for not considering this and is a minor point - it's quite a bit bigger than I imagined (probably just looks bigger against my 13.3" laptop) . It still fits into the bag, but a reduction in bezel size wouldn't go amiss. Don't ask for much, do I?Overall - i'm really pleased with it. If it had a better driver, I'd have given it 5 stars as the other down points are minor niggles.

I've only had the screen for a couple of days but so far I've had a positive experience using it with my ancient 17" 2010 MacBook Pro. I'm running Sierra rather than High Sierra as I have a third-party SSD and don't want to risk Apple's new filesystem knackering my drive.I use the Asus mostly for working on Word docs, reading academic papers and running statistics programs (that might sound boring but it isn't to me).I followed the advice of another reviewer and spent £7.99 on an Anker PowerLine+ USB-C to USB 3.0 cable (3ft) in case the supplied USB-C to -A adapter wasn't up to scratch. I downloaded and installed the Asus MB16AC Series USB Monitor Driver without a hitch. It all works fine.I use it indoors only and find that at full brightness it's about the same as 70% brightness on my MacBook. This is about where I have it normally as I find full brightness on the MacBook is too much, so I don't have any worries there. If you like your screen brighter then you might not be as happy as I am. The colours are slightly different to the MacBook but you can tweak the RGB settings of the colour temperature if you want; they're close enough for me so I haven't done any tweaking. I used the onscreen menu to set it to 'Standard' mode, 100% brightness, 100% contrast, 'cool' colour temperature. To my crude eye that's a decent enough match to my laptop screen but you might have higher standards.Scrolling is a bit janky (I like that word), which I presume is because I'm using the DisplayLink over USB-A rather than the USB-C that a more modern laptop would have. But for the low intensity work that I do it's fine and doesn't bother me at all. I tried to get it to play a movie on iTunes to see what it's like but it refused to play on the Asus, citing lack of HDCP compatibility. Again, I put that down to using USB-A rather than USB-C but I could be wrong about that. MacOS's Activity Monitor shows a decent amount of CPU activity when scrolling on the Asus, but that dies to next to nothing when I'm just looking at the screen, so with what I do I'm not worried about it contributing to the premature death of my MacBook from overheating. My MacBook battery is shot so I'm always plugged and can't comment on how much the Asus drains the battery. So, I've now joined the wonderful world of dual screen users and I'm expecting my productivity to soar!

This screen is compact and versatile, but don't expect the best quality image. The presets upon opening aren't optimal, so be sure to play around with the settings to get the screen the way you want (I set it to Standard Mode, brightness and contrast to 100, Trace Free to 60 and VividPixel to 50, if you want setting that might work for you), but expect a generally duller image compared to others (promotional images show people playing games on it, but I wouldn't).The touch functionality is precise and responsive, editing and drawing is pretty easy and scrolling through documents in portrait mode is much easier than on a traditional landscape screen. The software can be a bit intuitive. The auto rotate function doesn't just work automatically, I had to download an ASUS Display Widget that needs to be started when the screen is connected, it performs a sync, and then the auto rotate works. The widget can be closed and the function will still work, but if it's plugged out and back in again you have to use the widget. Not a big negative, but just an extra step that's a bit of a pain. The magnetic case/sleeve that the screen comes with is great, with folding to prop the screen at several angles in landscape and it an also act as a stand in portrait, which I didn't expect. The pen/stylus that comes with the screen is really useful, saves the screen from my fingers, and acts as a stand when inserted through the hole in the bottom corner, though the magnetic case means I don't really need the pen, it's just a nice touch.Stated features say that you can connect a phone to it and have a bigger screen, but this can be touch and go based on the phone you have. I have a OnePlus 5, and the screen won't connect to the phone, but I tried it with a OnePlus 7t and it works fine, though we had trouble getting the correct orientation.Probably my biggest issue with the screen is the packaging, it comes with a lot of soft plastic bags that aren't recycled in many areas. Even the paper manual and paper warranty were in separate small plastic zip lock bags.Overall, really nice product that I'm really happy with and serves the purpose I bought it for, just wish ASUS were a bit more environmentally aware in their packaging.

This is a very cool gadget with a couple of weird niggles that required some Googling/squinting to work out. But work them out I did, and write them down I shall. I'm no hero. I'm just a man with dreams of a portable monitor with adjustable brightness and colour contrast settings that doesn't keep falling over backwards.First off: the case. It's free (yay!). It's solid (yay!). It collapsed once because I didn't read the instructions properly (my fault!). It's basically one of those folding sheet cases that protects the monitor when you store it and then can be origami-ed into a stand. The angle isn't adjustable (boo!), but the thing that made it fall over was the stiff fabric tab that looks like it's flush against the inside of the case.It isn't. You have to get a nail under it and bend it up, as that's the bit that holds the monitor upright and stops it sliding about. If you don't, it does. So do.Second: the monitor comes with a driver CD. If your laptop doesn't have a CD drive, you'll have to get the drivers from the Asus website. It's not really an issue, but it's not plug-and-play so don't go carrying it off somewhere you don't have internet without installing the drivers first.Third: Windows 10. This monitor will work with Windows 10. Grudgingly. There's a brightness rocker switch on the left side of the monitor (in landscape mode) that didn't seem to do anything, and the screen by default starts off a bit dim. I had a look through some forum threads and it's something that seems to be a problem with Windows 10 and some versions of MacOS. I didn't find a way to get the switch working, but there's a bit of freeware called ScreenBright that lets you set the colour saturation and brightness (on Windows, at least). On launch there's a weird warning that using ScreenBright may invalidate your screen's warranty. I don't know if it does or why it should, but it does fix the brightness problem. Live dangerously. Change your brightness and contrast settings. Choose life.

OK, so I've only had this piece of equipment for a day, but I must admit it fits the bill.Running this against a MacBook Pro Touch 13 and it works first time, certainly bright enough under office lighting, and the screen itself is nice and light, something which can't be said of the case but more of that later. Also tested against a Lenovo using the USB3 to USB-C adapter which comes in the box, and that required a driver update for the graphics card, other drivers installed automatically on a Windows 10 build.Tested with CAD software and also played a 4K video on it which was smooth and effective (on both Lenovo and Mac). Why four stars ... well lets get back to that case. The screen is super lightweight and thin.I and my colleagues were however startled by how much the case weighs. I've yet to get a set of scales out, but it feels like it weighs as much as the screen. I would prefer a thin and super light slip case and use the hole in the screen (a very clever piece of design that by the way). Dropping a whole star for that seems a little churlish as it is the only thing which detracts form this being perfect for me.Another request for Asus .... could you make a 14 inch version which from a dimensional perspective matches the size of common 13" laptops. Would make the whole packing experience a little better, but that's really a picky request as the screen is the size advertised and as already stated a good size (That desire did not influence my four star rating)

I bought two of these to go on each side of my 15” MacBook Pro 2015. Despite most reviews on many forums suggesting how hard it is to get these to work on OS X, I went ahead and bought them anyway. Unsurprisingly, it took me 5 minutes to get both monitors to work. I connected both to a USB 3.0 hub connected to my MBP which has Mojave installed. The monitors didn’t switch on straight away, so I thought I’ll google “ASUS MB169B driver mac’ - doesn’t cost me anything! I clicked the link to the ASUS support page returned by Google, downloaded and installed the driver, rebooted and presto, both monitors worked instantly. I have Mojave installed on the MBP but the Catalina driver works just fine with Mojave. The screen quality is pretty darn good.Obviously if you expect nothing less than 100 trillion pixels per square mm and won’t entertain anything less than caviar and white truffles for lunch, you’ll be disappointed (and you are looking way below your price range). All I can say is, side by side with my 15” Retina MBP (which has two graphics cards), the monitors feel just like an extension of the MBP. I am using some demanding apps (DAWs, all sorts of VSTs, some elaborate trading software) on the monitors, and I literally get the same functionality that I get on my MBP screen.Nothing more to say really. Light, slim, high quality finish, USB-powered, no superfluous buttons/features/bits, no clutter. Perfect monitors if you ask me.

This is a good companion monitor to a laptop but you will need to be aware of its shortcomings to manage your own expectations.I was aware of the screen response time but it appears a little below what I was expecting. The screen is not great with managing anything that requires a lot of change i.e. movies are ok and moving windows around you will definitely notice the lag.The resolution is what I expected but you really notice the difference when operating it with a high def laptop screen. There is not a lot of real estate to work on.The brightness is also a noticeable issue and everytime you plug it in, you need to manually crank up the brightness to max.(I have not played around with the Asus software to see whether you can maintain brightness settings after unplug)So, what is this good for? Well, I use this external usb 3 monitor for 1 purpose.. reference. It is ideal if you are not looking for any real dynamic display qualities and would like to work on the laptop screen and reference a pdf or word document on the usb monitor. Also good for leaving email open to keep an eye on the incoming. It does play movies in acceptable quality but no point if you have your laptop screen anyway (you wouldnt be productive working and watching a movie anyway) Possibly using it for news video feeds is ok.It is light and portable, so as it goes, I would recommend this as a productivity tool and nothing else.

This product is amazing and exactly what I was expecting!Very good quality product with a great case/stand and cable (which I thought was long enough but had monitor on the left of the laptop).Installation:I didn't even need the CD. I have Windows 7 and as soon as I connected the monitor to my USB port it started installing the driver. All I had to do (which I find I have to always do when install a driver off a USB plug in, was to un-plug the device when the driver has finished installing and then plug it back in again and wait. So you might get a message saying something like unable to install driver, just un-plug and plug back in again.I tried it on both my Sony Vaio laptop (about 5 years old)and my work HP laptop (about 3 months old) and they were both successfully installed in about 45 seconds.I tested watching a film and that was perfect, so I'm looking forward to working away from home now next week hee hee!The brightness and contrast switch on the left side works just fine and as I was happy to find out, the USB 3 plug (data/power) plus in at the bottom of the left side. I personally find it plugs in solidly and I wiggled it around without any issues (so maybe the problem some people has commented on has been fixed) in fact I found I had to 'tug' the USB plug to get it out, so that was satifying to know.So if you are not sure about getting this product I can highly recommend it.

I didn't know USB monitors even existed until a couple of months ago and I couldn't quite believe that this screen could be powered from a USB port, but that's all that's needed. Just a single cable from a USB port for picture and power. Now, as others have said, the picture is a little dark and that's more than likely down to the power restrictions of USB ports. And yes, there's a tiny bit of lag if you really look for it. This all makes it less than ideal for gaming, photo editing, etc. but it's more than adequate for day-to-day work. I'm a software developer and find myself working more and more on the go. When you're used to your dual monitor setup in the office,it's difficult to be stuck with just a 1336x768 laptop display. You might look a bit odd setting it up in a coffee shop but it's great for hotel rooms, customer premises or when I go home to my parents place for a weekend or any place where carrying around a bulky monitor isn't feasible. The carry case that doubles as a stand is perfect and while there is no dedicated storage for the cable there are a couple of elastic loops that will stop it falling out when you place it in the fold of the cover. If you don't like it as a stand then there are plenty of little third-party tablet stands that will also work.Great looking monitor that's very easy to travel with.

Love it. Yes, the reviews are correct the brightness is lower than a powered monitor or a laptop screen, but I don't find it a problem. I travel a lot for work and always have tons of work to do. In my office and my home office I find a dual screen vital and so productive. With this screen I can now have the same in a hotel. The quality of the screen is without doubt excellent. Both my work PC and my personal PC are Microsoft surface products. One is a pro and the other is the laptop. If any of you own a surface you know that because of high res screens and the scaling, as soon as you connect another monitor to it the displays do appear slightly blurred. This Asus monitor out of all the monitors,TVs and projectors I’ve connected to suffers from the affect the least. The image seems crisp and vibrant. I haven’t used the lead that was supplied, but instead opted to purchase a better-quality cable. I did have connection issues with the Surface Pro 4. At times the monitor would for a moment turn itself off and restart. Especially with the Pro running on batteries. With some googling I found that the Surface PCs have underpowered USB ports. I had the screen brightness turned up to full. Once I turned that down I haven't had a single problem. Overall very pleased with the purchase.

As a developer in the events industry, I often have too much open for one screen. In the office, this isn't a problem as I have 3 external monitors as well as the laptop screen, but in the field, I need something more portable that will fit in my laptop bag with my laptop. The beauty with this screen is the simplicity - get it up and running with any laptop in the amount of time it takes to get a tablet out and stood up in a typical case.Even better - it works through any Thunderbolt 3.0 enabled USB-C port as if it were connected by HDMI, meaning very quick response times, or through any USB 3 port (USB-A or USB-C) using some additional drivers on the OS (there as standard on Windows 10 "creators update").Surprisingly, this even works with my S8 without any issues, but it seems the phone will always output portrait mode badly (as a letterboxed landscape video) whilst landscape is always fine. For the S9, I had to turn down the brightness on the monitor prior to connecting for it to work, possibly as the S9 uses more of it's power capability than the S8.I look forward to the MB16AP as the onboard battery (without adding much weight or any size) should allow improved usage on mobile devices.

Love the product. I am on the road most of the time and having access to a 2nd monitor is super. Couple of downsides with this is that the screen is not very bright even in max. I really like a bright screen. The other is that it drains the battery from the laptop a lot faster. There is a new version of this screen that its own battery, but I could not wait for it since its not released yet so went ahead with this. I guess that one would be heavier as well. This one is very light. Quiet thin as well so does not take up much space.UPDATE: Seems I had a blond moment, the brightness was only set at 50%. Now it is good. Uprated to 5*.UPDATE: Been using this a lot over the last 4 or so months I have had it.It travels a lot with me so I can have access to a 2nd screen any time I am on the road. Still love it, but I noticed there are white blobs appearing in the screen, spots that are brighter than the surroundings, about the size of a whiteboard marker tip. Started with 1 blob, now I have about 7 or so. I will need to send this back, which will be annoying as there will be postage costs and time that I will not have access to the screen.

I bought the monitor hoping it would be useful as a portable monitor for a mini-itx. However, it is incompatible with graphics cards as they don't allow the motherboard to transmit a displayport over USB-C signal once they are installed so do not make the same mistake I did.For those with integrated graphics however and a compatible port, the monitor is fantastic. The display is clear and crisp and there are plenty of useful settings such as the game mode and blue light level selector amongst other things. The smartcase is an excellent accompaniment to it as well; functioning as a sturdy stand once folded the right way and obviously also protects it well and keeps it secure when you're on the move with it.Overall,if you have a modern laptop/macbook with a thunderbolt port or a USB-C port with DP alternate mode (marked with a displayport logo), then this is a no brainer in comparison to other portable monitors. It far exceeds the quality of those. I will need to return mine though due to the compatability issue with my GPU.

Bought this for work in order to give mobile office workers using a laptop at client's site an easy way to have a second screen and have a similar client side environment to what they get in the office. The display connects via an included USB cable and benefits from USB 3.0 connection (marked by a SS on above the port on a laptop). You need to install some additional software to get it all to work nicely but work it does. The screen resolution is Full HD (1920 x 1080) and has both sufficient brightness to work effectively as an additional lightweight monitor. The screen comes with a carry case and cable in order to plug into the laptop, the carry case additionally acts as the stand for the screen. There is limited options for the angle the screen will be on the stand but you are trading that for a full HD additional, lightweight screen that is the best portable screen I've been able to find on the market. It also works with minimal lag in Windows over USB 3.0 and is great quality for the price and portability.
