I bought two of these devices one for me and then one for my mother. I have used it extensively, just about every day for 12+ months. It is a great product and really useful for regular skype calls which are now unencumbered by the PC. I have it on my desk beside the computer. The speaker-phone function really works well. I just press a button when I want to answer an incoming Skype call and speak. For outgoing calls I mostly use the recent callers list. Using my computer for Skype calls I was always scrambling around for my headset. Laptop speakers tend to be not quite good enough for a natural conversational call.If I need to open a spreadsheet or address book record or type the last few words of an email or boot the computer up or something during the call,I have both hands free, there is no drop-out while the computer does some thinking. After the call I can carry on exactly where I left off. It is very convenient to have a Skype conversation independently of the computer - just like the telephone really. The video function is good quality and makes it a great conferencing device (nb not as host though. See later.) WiFi and ethernet connections are no hassle and it remembers its settings when you unplug it.Do not think of this as a handheld device. It is not even really a portable device, although it can be easily moved around the house if you carry it in both hands. However, being tethered to a mains outlet still allows it to be a really useful product. Once you have found a good place for it to live, just leave it there. If there is an incoming call you can hear it from a good distance. You could have one in the kitchen and one in the study. The product design is brilliant. I feel I will be using this product for years to come. The Skype software which comes with it is really intuitive and straightforward. The touch screen fits seamlessly into the useability pattern. Making and receiving a call is as easy as a plain old telephone (only better when the contacts have their pictures uploaded) and my 90 year old mother to cope with it - after I set up wireless broadband in her house and her Skype address book etc.I don't think you can host a conference call with the current version of Skype installed. If you can, it is not at all obvious how. As for sending or receiving a Skype IM, I have not even tried. However, I have my computer for setting up conferencing and for IM and Skype copes brilliantly with the way I can establish or receive a call on either machine. Maybe a Skype software update will become available. However, I hope the simple intuitive interface is not compromised in any way when/if that happens.I have had to use device reset once after 12+ months of use. I think the call history got too big for it to handle and it started to misbehave. You do not have to reset the wi-fi settings when doing this, so it only required re-entering skype ID and password. No big deal.

Bought the Asus Skype videophone as a Xmas present from the family for my elderly mother-in-law to keep in touch with the grand kids in Houston & KL. I bought it on Amazon & took it round to her house in Aberdeenshire, set it up with all our family Skype contacts, plugged it into the mains, a wired connection, a single port router modem to connect it to the internet & my wife had arranged the broadband internet connection (Plusnet because there was no contract minimum term - in case it all went pear shaped). Since she has never used a PC or laptop I didn't want either because I knew I'd spend every weekend showing her how to do anything & keeping the anti virus etc. up to date.I'd searched YouTube for vids of folks using the Asus to see how easy it would be to use & it fitted the bill. After one run through with me & another 3 or 4 assisted times whilst she ran through it herself, she now cannot be stopped & Skypes Houston & KL whenever she wants & has also taken to Skyping us & other relatives in Aberdeenshire rather than phoning. Skype image & speech is clear whenever I'm Skyped by her, she can also see & hear us all very clearly (very important to see the grand kids clearly!) & she finds it dead easy to use. Sure, it's too simple for PC/Mac users, there are features that could be better etc....BUT it's great for Granny!

I don't normally review items but have felt compelled to make an exception in this case. We have recently moved to New Zealand from the UK and bought this phone for my parents in law who don't have a computer and would never feel comfortable operating one anyway. The controls for the Asus are really staright forward, so they have been able to pick up how to use it with no problem at all. We now speak to them every day, which has made the move a lot easier for us and them, and their grandchildren. Don't worry about all the stuff about there being no battery. The phone works absolutely fine from the mains and my parents in law have found absolutely no need to move it from away from the mains socket anyway.I also did a quick test before we left the UK and it appears to retain all your settings if you switch it off at the mains and turn it back on again, though I wasn't able to test this over any period of time. The resolution of the picture (at both ends) and sound quality are also fine. For people in our situation, this product is perfect.

We got one of these Asus video phones for our elderly parents in the UK, so we could have video calls from here in Oz. We got BT to put broadband in, a sister plugged the cable from the phone to the router and we started the calls. It really is that easy to set up. I had already created a Skype account so for the first time use only they had to enter a username and passwordThe quality of the video at my end is excellent, they say the same their end. Our parents call us by pressing our name on the screen then pushing one button, its that easy. To answer a call they press one button twice. This product is excellent for technophobes and the elderly, it really is one or two buttons to press once its set up,and the set up is really easy as well, one cable that you would struggle to get wrong, then enter the name and password, first time only.I would recommend this for anyone who wants to see their relatives and friends who are afar, but dont want to go down the computer road. We are really pleased with the quality and ease of use.

I bought one last year for my 90 year-old father using Skype as its simpler to operate than a computer and you can leave it switched on all the time. It was so good that I recently bought one for myself. The first one had an internal battery so you could unplug it from the mains and walk around with it. The battery life was 15 minutes. I naturally assumed that the second one would have a battery but it didn't. Check the small print! You cannot buy these batteries so I have a model which can only be used when plugged into the mains. Some suppliers do include the battery. Presumably the one not sending the battery is increasing his profit. They use up about 300 Mb an hour compared to about 100 Mb an hour for a computer so if you are paying for your gigabytes it will work out about 3 times more expensive.

We moved with our 3 kids to the USA in 2009, the kids are now 3, 1 and 6. I have purchased 4 of these all together, one for us, one for each grandparent and recently this new touch screen for my sister and her 3 children. We use them every day and more importantly the kids and grandparents use them without our help to talk with their cousins, nana and grandad. They are so easy to set up, even my mother a self confessed techno phobe managed. Free to use and an absolute must for families who live a long distance away. Our kids see their grand parents twice a year but as they see and speak to them every day it's like they were never separated. Our 3 purchased in 2009 have never gone wrong with daily use.So far I have recommended this phone to 4 other friends and it has literally transformed their lives.
