After a few delays, EA's much-touted co-op game Army of Two is finally here, and it just about delivers. Featuring a plot ripped straight from the headlines (9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq and so on), it tells the tale of two mercenaries (or private security if you like) who are sent on all the toughest missions with the best weaponry as the poor old US Army just can't afford it. Apparently.Anyway, these two guys are HARD and they can succeed where battalions would fail It's not like we can criticise the plot as we've all been playing shooters for years and know full well that one man (or in this case, two) CAN destroy an entire army if he puts his mind (and guns) to it.But it's not just righting wrongs,oh no. Our heroes also earn plenty of cold, hard cash out of their mission objectives which they can spend on bigger and better weapons. Better still, the money gets wired as soon as they complete their missions so they can spend it more or less straight away at their local arms dealer. The wonders of modern banking technology. This game is built from the ground up to be played by two players, and it's the best way to play it. In single player, your AI buddy does a surprisingly decent job, but two humans make a much better fist of it and getting through a particularly tricky section with a friend is satisfying. The core tactic of Army of Two is for one man to lay down suppressing fire whilst the other flanks the enemy and takes them out. The more you fire on an enemy the more `Aggro' you build up. This makes nearby enemies only concentrate on you and your buddy then becomes virtually invisible and can sneak up on them. If you totally fill your aggro meter you can also enter `Overkill' mode whereby you get unlimited ammo and time slows down to really dish out some pain. But Aggro isn't all of it. Any situation can be approached a number of ways, so if you want you can just snipe from distance, lob grenades in, fire rockets, jump on an abandoned machine gun turret, grab a car door or riot shield to use as mobile cover or just run in like a lunatic all guns blazing. Thinking your tactics through pays off big time in this game as the latter option doesn't tend to be the most successful. The game works very well a lot of the time, however the controls are fiddly and the use of cover and Aggro doesn't always work as well as I would like. The graphics are very good, character animation is fluid, effects such as bullets smacking into concrete, explosions and even the deaths of your enemies are impressive. Voice acting is generally convincing and sound effects are good.As well as playing through the campaign with a friend, you can also go online to play versus matches, where two pairs fight it out to complete objectives across a map to earn the most money. There aren't many maps and there isn't much to it, but some fun can be had.If you enjoy co-op gameplay, Army of Two is for you. The controls take some getting used to and the game is a little confusing at first, but after a couple of plays you get used to the gameplay mechanics and start devising the best tactics. It loses out on five stars as there isn't too much for a single player here, there are only six proper missions and other online modes are sparse. Plus the controls aren't great in places and using cover and movement don't always work as well as they should. But importantly, it's still fun and any game featuring air guitar with a rifle, copious high fives and big guns can't be all bad.

"OK," you're thinking, "I love 3rd Person Shooters and I love coop play. This looks perfect!" And you'd be half right.Army of two basically picks up where Gears left off, with slightly more emphasis on the coop action. I haven't played this alone, so can't comment on the partner AI, but I know for a fact that the coop mode is excellent fun, if not the most polished piece of gameplay ever.Think of this game like an Arnie film (an early one like Commando, it's not so much like Twins): It's big, it's brash, it's full of guns and searing one-liners. The game appears to have been created to simulate an all-action movie, and in that respect it succeeds big style. The characters are robust and geniunely emotive,as you somehow relate to the two lunkheaded protagonists and geniunely care what happens to them. The addition of a button to either high-five or smack your teammate was also inspired, letting you modify the apparent mood of your heroes. The set pieces are meticulously created, with the back-to-back mode being entirely pointless, but good fun none-the-less. The story is involving, although there is a slight feeling of "Hey, weren't we in Mexico a minute ago? How are we in Israel now?" The final mission is perhaps a little disappointing, but the expansion pack, available for free download, makes up for this initial oversight. But for all that, the game isn't perfect. My major gripe would be the longevity, as the game does seem to be over almost before it's begun, and all the weapon modification in the world can't really hold your attention after the 2nd play through. The weapons system is also a slight let down - there are lots of guns in various categories (machine guns, pistols, snipers, shotguns etc.), but they all feel fairly similar and once you've upgraded one, there's little point doing any of the others, which obviously reduces the need for a second play through. One final issue is the STUPID PARACHUTING. The game suggests that you use a sniper here, but an SAS marksman would struggle to hit anything bobbing around in the air, making you a sitting duck. These scenes really irritate, as they lose you so much health and take away any advantage you had on the enemy.Overall though, this game was a pleasure to play through, and a really fun piece of novelty. With a few tweaks and a bit more longevity, 40th Day could well be a show-stopper.

Set in a future where private armies are undermining government military, blah, blah...hell, it's a shooter. And it's for two people. And they swear and high-five each other when whacking the enemy. What's not to like? Fire at the enemy melts, get your aggro meter glowing and all guns will be trained on you. Leaving your buddy free to sneak up and shoot them in the back of the head like the dogs they are. Controls easy (nice touch is tapping Y button to baseball slide into cover). Being a co-op, playing the campaign alone means trusting the AI, which in the main is pretty good. Simple shoulder and d-pad clicks send out orrders, and if you're taking too much heat, you can tell your guy to get all medieval on the enemy ass,and he'll draw fire while you recover. Follow set objectives to gain cash (which you can also bump up completing side missions and searching for level bonuses) which you can they spend, spend, spend on new weapons and upgrades (excellent touch) as well as blinging the sh*t out of your guns. Enemies can't help but pay attention to a diamond-studded missile launcher or solid gold AK47. You can also purchase body armour upgrades and menacing steel face masks. Nice.Gameplay is intuitive, menus really smart and clear. First level tutors you through the various player controls, and hints pop up in the early stages. Characters are meaty, dialogue suitably rough, tough, rude and funny, enemies aggressive and locations well drawn (apart from the odd texture rip). Sound, including score, dialogue and weapons, score a big fat 10. Problems? Not many. Given the release date fell back by several months, the gameplay doesn't feel quite as polished as it should. Cover system not as tight as Gears or R6 Vegas and automatic weapons seem a little weedy in the early stages (I emptied an entire clip into one dumbass melt without him dropping). But you're not going to buy this for the campaign...you're gonna buy it to hit Xbox live and go hellfire crazy with a buddy. And that's where Ao2 as at its best. Multiplayer hook-up is easy, but I did notice a warning saying you could only co-op on XBL with another PAL disc owner...I guess that means you can't play with you Yankee buddies. Shame.Overall, it's kick-ass fun, and certainly the best shooter since CoD4. Hoo-ahh!

If, like my brother and I, you love your co-op shoot-em-ups, then Army of Two is definitely worth getting. I'd compare it favourably to Kane and Lynch and the Conflict games as a base of reference, but it has quite a few unique bells and whistles too. For starters, one of the most unusual aspects of AoT is that you can't pick up enemy weapons, which might sound odd. Instead you can purchase different weapons from various mid-mission arms dealers and then customise them in the most imaginative ways. Once I'd finished with my AK-47, for example, the various barrel, cartridge, stock and frountmount additions left it looking completely unrecognisable! The co-op features are also a big part of Army of Two.Whether you have to perform a simultaneous snipe or boost each other to climb to a high platform, it's clear that this game was really designed for two players. There are the typical vehicle scenarios where one of you has to act as the gunner while the other drives, but there is also the creative use of riot-shields where one player holds the shield and moves whilst the other sporadically pops out and fires.Which leads me on to the "Aggro" concept, which Army of Two seems to consider one of their better ideas. The theory is that if player A is firing, hostiles will all concentrate their fire on him and completely ignore player B, who can surreptitiously slip around behind and take them out without hassle. I found that it works well in theory but rarely in practice. That said, however, it was certainly an innovative and interesting strategic addition to my usual gung-ho gameplay. The graphics are of course superb, as well as the real-world physics we've all come to expect from the 360. The story and characters are engaging and the co-op and customisation factors make Army of Two a very well-rounded game. The only negative point about it is that, like so many 360 shooters I've played recently (Halo 3, Kane & Lynch, Gears of War) it is far too short, with about 14 hours of solid gaming. But with huge customisation possibilities, fluid action-packed gameplay and the option of online multiplayer battles, I can't recommend this game highly enough. If you like tactical shoot-em-ups or co-op games in general, you'll love Army of Two.

Firstly, as my title suggests, if you, like me, read lots of reviews about Ao2 before even thinking about buying it you may be a little down-heartened by the 'bad' reviews. But I can say that this game is a LOT of fun, manly to the core and with graphics like a Team Fortress 2 on steroids (cartoony but rugged). The controls are easy to pick up, minus the bit of Gears confusion (A doesn't get you into cover!) and the combat is usually flawless; sometimes you can't do exactly what you want but it's nothing unexpected, no game is perfect.Secondly, I will say that this game is for you AND A FRIEND, the AI is fine most the time, but the game really shines when playing with a human: you can create intelligent plans and really use Aggro to its full potential. When playing with the AI it isn't as horrible as the reviewers make it out to be; sure he does run into the enemy sometimes but so do I, if you tell him to lay down agressive fire (stay in cover and draw the Aggro) he'll do it.But if you're looking for large-scale mulitplayer action this game isn't for you, the multiplayer is limited to two-on-two, which in my oppinion is great, it's different to all those other multiplayers around, COD4, Halo 3 and Gears of War, the multiplayer doesn't deviate from the two-man mentality of the campaign. It's all about the money!Overall this game has fulfilled most if not all my expectations: with easy to use controls featuring the best bits from Gears, plus a lovely little baseball-style slide into cover, lovably-cartoony graphics and an RPG element of 'weapon-pimping' there is very little in this game any man wouldn't love, with the addition of Aggro also makes it an intelligent game as well as bodybuilder-aggressive. I highly recommend this- based entirely on the campaign.

Whether you're playing alone or ripping it up on split-screen co-op, Army of Two will leave you craving for more - and at Amazons price of £10.99 this game is a must-have for anyone wanting a game that clearly has quality to it.Straight off the bat - this game is really, really good. The characters are believable, the dialogue is well thought out (no cheesy one liners here!) and the game play is fairly solid.Pro's:- Impressive graphics- Good enemy A.I. (so long as you play on normal difficulty or higher)- Clear storyline. Great characters. (complete with great cut-scenes)- Great Co-Op shoot 'em up.- Moderately easy to gain achievement points.- Original and fun ideas for Xbox Live play.-Re-playability- 2 content downloads - one is FREE and adds 2 extra levels to the game.Con's:- Some levels have annoying bits of clipping which can make some enemies frustrating.- Xbox Live ranked matches can be few and far between.- Story can seem somewhat short for obsessive gamers. Conclusion:I gave this game 5 out of 5 simply because I could only really find one fault with the game that I felt could affect someone buying it and that is the fact that Xbox Live gamers might find the online matches sporadic (unless you have 3 other friends who own the game). This has not affected the 5 stars I have given this game simply because it does not best reflect how good the quality of the game is.I would definitely recommend this game. I love it! With a sequel on the way, there's a lot of promise in a good series of games here and if you're in need of an extra online gamer for Army of Two, count me in! (Gamertag: CyberChristFF)

Based on the previews of this title I thought it would be disappointing, however having now finished it I found it a whole lot of fun. Yes it takes the Gears of War template and sticks it in a fairly generic setting, but to my mind its got more rewarding shooting than Gears (which if you take away the chainsaw weapon is actually quite boring to play) and better A.I.I found Army of Two to be pretty tricky in places (you achieve this by simply changing the difficulty to a harder setting - try it, you might find the game lasts longer) and your partner is effective at healing you and taking out the enemy (but not so effective as to make you redundant). It took me about 16 hours to finish the gameand it mixes things up nicely so that when the on-foot shooting may be stretching your patience theres a hovercraft section or parachuting section that follows for variety. The graphics are good but not incredible - theres a couple of bits with obvious glitching and the textures aren't quite as crisp as Mass Effect. The music is pretty good as are the sound effects, the interplay between the characters is quite amusing and the story is well told (albeit nothing you haven't seen before). On the whole this is surprisingly good for an EA title and just plain good fun in general, hopefully a sequel will follow that improves on this excellent first game. And one last thing - all these people who reckon the guns are rubbish: try upgrading them, then they tend to work better!! I had no problems with their power or accuracy so maybe these people are just a little bit rubbish at computer games?

Well, this game is something different, forget CoD4, Gears of War, it is not, but, it is a good fun arcade game. Realism HA!!!!!Playing online with a buddy on the co-op has to be the best feature, and can lead to some laugh out loud moments. The online Vs is a bit ropey and can be extremely annoying, but ultimatley fun never the less.I haven't played single player campagin yet and to be honest doesn't really appeal to me, will probably only do it foe the achievements. The graphics and animation on the main characters are good and well executed, the enemy are simpler. The enviroments are very simple and the textures look as if off the original xbox. The weapons are varied and animated god on the characters, not like many games when you change weapons they dissapere on the characters. Strangley i found the pistols to be the most effective weapons, strange. Sniping is the biggest waste of time going. you can't move when your zoomed in. i really could swear at this point. In all a good arcadey stocking filler. However not everybodies cup of tesbest adivce for this would either to be buy it second hand or rent it first. don't pay full price, you could be dissapointed.

This game is superb for playing online co-op. The aggro tactic (one of you takes the fire while the other flanks) is well thought out and well executed. The gameplay is nothing special but still great but that is all outweighed by the brilliance of "pimping" your weapons. You get to buy a large array of weapons with many upgrades for each. And when that wasnt enough and you feel a little let down, for $10,000 you get to cover them in gold! It might not sound exciting now, but running around with a golden AK-47 or Silver and Gold plated Stinger missle launcher for some reason gave me a huge buzz and me and my mate couldnt wait to get more money to pimp out our whole aresnal!!The only slip uphere as far as im concerned (as long as you arent one of these people who focuses and sound and stuff) is that it was far far to short!! Just as i was getting excited about pimping out my new shotgun to the max, It ended! The only consolation here is that if you play it again on professional mode, all the primary weapons are unlocked and you can begin covering them in ridiculous amounts of gold too!In short:Great IdeaGreat StoryGREAT GUNS!TOO SHORT!!

well there seems to be a lot of negative reviews on here for this game, which to be honest are'nt justified. firstly this game has a lot to live upto due to its own hype. largely it manages it, the graphics although not ground breaking do the job well and there are some nice effects (the water is the best seen in a while).but as most gamers know its not the graphics that make the game (although these days it helps). the gameplay is really good fun, and in places quite tough. the agro system works nicely and adds quite a unique tactical feel to the game, making it more then just another run and gun template. the game has a good sense of humor (if a little dark due to its subject matter)and as mentioned loads here has an amazing gun configuration system. you can change anything from stocks to barrels and even "pimp" your gun.if you loved gears of war and are a general fan of tactical shooters, then there's enough here for you to enjoy. my only gripe is the game is quite short (depending on skill 6-12 hours tops), and due to this i fell it deserves a 4 score instead of 5. roll on ao2 2!!!

I was looking for a co-op game to play with my brother, and this game had some interesting reviews, but also some bad ones. Anyway, I decided to give it a try, and I'm really happy I got it. It may not be a game worth 55, but for 25 or 30 it's a great deal. The graphics are great, nearly as good as they can get, and the only problem with the sound is that gunshots sound a little weak, but the music and the voice acting are awesome. As playability goes, controls can seem a bit strange at first, but once you get used to them, they're nearly second nature. You have lots of great fights in huge places against legions of enemies, and you can buy lots of new weapons and customize them as the game goes on.Only problem is: story mode is a bit short, but it really challenges you to replay on a harder mode (you keep your weapons and customs, so it's not like starting all over again). Also, if you play alone, your partners AI it's so bad you wonder why the I is there, but hey, who's going to buy a game called army of TWO to play alone? You have plenty of other shooters out there for that!

This game is a co-op 3rd person shooter that bases progression through the game on tactical gameplay with your partner. It is therefore best to play with someone who you are in direct contact with (I played using split screen), as you can then decide how to assault a situation. The main point is that one person attracts the attention and fire of the enemies (called AGGRO) whilst the other person can sneak to a better location. The amount of AGGRO received depends on the amount of fire put down and the type of weapon used (e.g. you would receive little with a silenced pistol). Weapons can be bought and upgraded throughout the game, using money earnt during each mission.I bought this game for the Xbox 360 and really enjoyed it,I have moved away from the single player games as I find playing with others is far more enjoyable and engaging.I would highly recommend this game to anyone, and would probably recommend buying the original first before moving onto the newest version as the gameplay is nearly identical (and it's cheaper!)

At first I bought this game, simply because I had owned it for the PS3. But after purchasing it for the Xbox 360, I got to enjoy it all again.I found that the idea of a two man squad, although not new, was very well thought out by the makers of this game. I got to enjoy the control of my other teammate, using him to cover, as bait or to watch as he takes out the tough guys, who loved to target me.The guns are all so well designed, and function differently, that you never get bored of trying different weapons. What I didn't like about this game, was that some of the levels act a bit too short for my liking. I also got frustrated at times, when the targeting system went a bit haywire at times.I certainly found that this game can easily stand it's own against other rival games that have been out, and still are arriving. It provides a companionship in the fight, that is hard to get in others, that forget that it's real people playing, and that interaction can make it so much easier to play.Read full review...

As far as the story mode goes it's brilliant, keeps you playing the game for a good while, especially if you play it on professional. The AI intelligence works well, as they help boost you up to ledges, pull you up from ledges and so on. My only problem with this game is playing online. Which i was hoping to be brilliant. The idea of having objectives whilst playing against another 'Army of Two' is pretty good and stops the the player getting bored with constantly shooting the opposition. But i just don't like the way you go down and have to wait to get revived. Unlike the actual gameplay if you go down you can continue to shoot at people. So if your looking for a good co-op online game irecommend gears of war.I would recommend this game if your looking for a new style of co-op.Overall a good game but in my opinion it was rushed and they could of touched up on the online play.

There's one reason to get this game - CO-OP. As long as you have a friend who is competent & understands how to adapt the shooter formula to draw fire, this is a very enjoyable experience. One that we are seeing less of today. The Dialog is extremely witty & the voice acting is 1st rate. In fact, I think this was a big game changer. The "Bad Guys" have set pieces & are memorable unlike in the later games. And pimping your guns up is addictive fun! Playing this into the early hours of the morning becomes something of a habit once you realise where this game's strengths lie.It is a very challenging game at times though. So if you're used to the ease of rushing through narrative like Gears of War 3,this isn't for you.All in all, a good game with fun aspects.
