Alien Isolation is the Alien game that fans of the series have been waiting for, and takes the franchise back to survival horror in its most pure and basic sense as seen in that first Alien movie. The game is set 15 years after the Nostromo incident in which Ellen Ripley and her crew disappeared. You play Ripleys daughter, Amanda Ripley, an engineer and mechanic who has dedicated her adult life to discovering exactly what happened to her mother. You get that chance when you receive a visit from a 'company' man stating that he believes the flight recorded for the Nostromo has been recovered and currently resides on the soon-to-be-decommissioned Sevastopol space station.Upon approaching the station you receive no response, and once you have boarded you find it ramshackle and derelict, damaged and with hastily erected barriers strewn about. Evidence of conflict is everywhere, and those crew that survive either run and hide from you in paranoid fear or attack you unprovoked. It is not long until you discover what has caused the disarray - there is a 'monster' on board...As Ripley you must make your way through the station in order to uncover the mystery of what has happened there, and once you discover that the surviving inhabitants are being stalked by an Alien it becomes you mission to survive and somehow escape. The game is primarily a stealth related survival horror that requires the gamer to sneak around the station avoiding the Alien that stalks you, as well as the stations malfunctioning artificial humans and the paranoid human inhabitants who are all to keen in their fear to shoot first and ask questions later.Whilst synthetics and humans will generally ignore you unless you choose to actively engage them, the Alien will proactively search whatever part of the station you are in in order to find and kill you, and will make use of the myriad of ventilation ducts available to meet this end. Identifying the signs that indicate that the alien is in the vicinity then becomes a priority skill, and these signs can be anything from a line of sight identification of the alien, to streams of goop dripping from a ventilation shaft, to the 'thud' of footsteps, a hiss, or even the screams of other occupants of the station as the alien rips them to shreds.Ripley is not a fighter. Whilst you do obtain a few weapons through out the game, including a cattle prod, wrench like multi-tool, pistol, shotgun and several other items, these cannot be used against the alien, and are only of use against humans, synthetics, or as a distraction to draw out the alien. In short, if the alien sees you it will pursue you relentlessly unless you are able to hide or somehow break line of sight with it, and if it catches you then you will be d.e.a.d.To help you negotiate the station and survive both the alien and other threats, Ripley is capable of crawling, hiding under beds and desks, shimmying through access ducts, hiding in lockers or cabinets until the threat has passed, or creating distractions with objects or by bypassing electrical systems such as an oxygen purification system or loudspeaker in order to distract or attract the alien. You also soon obtain a motion tracker, the iconic 'bip-bip-bip' of which will likely be the most important tool in ensuing your survival.Ripley as an engineer is also able to collect junk in order to improvise several objects to help her in her quest for survival, including flashbangs, pipe bombs, EMP devices, smoke bombs and medi-kits, as well as obtaining flares and a head torch in order to light your way through the darkened Sevastopol station.Due to the destruction upon the station your way ahead is rarely clear, and this will usually require you to determine an alternative route to your objective. This may be bypassing via an alternative route, restoring power to a door or area, finding a key, or more commonly obtaining a tool such as a plasma torch or electronic bypass device that will allow you to unlock a door that was previously impassible. These devices will be discovered periodically throughout the game, meaning that there is plenty of opportunity to move back and forth between different sections of the station in order to unlock sections previously denied to you and obtain the booty and secrets that lie within them.Graphically the game is very good. The station is dark, foreboding and atmospheric. Lights flicker, steam vents unexpectedly, and the tone is such that it is rarely easy to tell what hazards lie ahead. There is very little in the way of music, but the game makes excellent use of sound in order to build tension and suspense. Additionally the characters and station are very much fitting the 70's visual style of the original movie - all flashing diodes, tape recorders, and green screen computer terminals. In terms of complaints I really only have the one - that being that save points can sometimes be mercilessly rare - and you will on occasion find yourself replaying a section over and over again because your objective is so far away or so complicated to get to that being killed by the alien is more likely than it is not.Alien Isolation proves that there is still plenty of life in the Xbox 360. Its an excellent game that reminds us that survival horror isnt about running around acting indestructible with a dozen highly destructive weapons and killing dozens of mundane threats, but about cowering in the dark, hiding and knowing that the best you can do is try and survive another minute, and that if you are discovered then its game over man...game over...

I only pick up a controller once every-so-often and typically stick to the Tomb Raider, Bioshock, Red Dead class. Add to that, I’m a 70’s child, so picking up this game was a no-brainer, although the marketing and ‘Isolation’ didn’t fill me with confidence. The cover is an image of ‘who?’ exactly..? and it’s set on ‘what?’ space station..?? And I’m ‘isolated?’ so I’m just… alone?? I didn’t sell the idea of ALIEN to me at all. I kinda wrote it off as a tenuous cash-in and left it on my shelf for 6 months. Boy, was I wrong..!It’s hard to know where to start in my praise for this game. Sure, maybe it has a couple of niggles (not many) but ultimately, this game went far beyond the basic ‘creep about and get to the exit’ idea I had imagined.First off, and most importantly, this game is the real deal. I could not think of a better and more accurate homage and blending of the original ALIEN/ALIENS movies. The atmosphere, locations, settings, style, music, effects were on point down to the finest detail… and boy there are fine details.EnvironmentThe space station is basically the Nostromo, but expanded over a huge scale, including docking bays, lounges, diners, infirmaries, rec rooms, flight decks, and of course dozens of hallways and, gasp, air ducts. It feels more like being trapped in a shopping mall overnight than a tight spaceship. The detail and authenticity is staggering, even on Xbox 360. The lighting, textures, consoles, gadgetry, costumes and retro-future visual ambience has been pulled straight out of Ridley’s original Alien world. It’s stunning; especially to an Alien nut such as myself. The lighting, especially, is superb and gives every environment its own life and personality.Original gameplayIt’s not a GTA sand-boxer, a Tomb Raider vaulter or a Halo shooter. You’re following a linear set of plans/levels, while constantly updated with your mission/survival targets, but then Alien:Iso slightly reinvents the rules. You’d expect to dispatch immediate baddies, scavenging the room for lost ammo, power-ups, keys, etc. before moving on, but here, you can’t kill the bad guy, and he’s not exactly going to remain stranded on a ledge shooting fireballs at you in an attempt to thwart your escape. The bad guy is in the room and he’s on the hunt. Make a sound and you’re brutally, violently and most often, pant-wettingly, brunch. Keep one eye on the motion detecter, stay quiet and don’t forget to hold your breath. Go in guns blazing and… “GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!”There will be times you can rest to take a breath, but this game is designed to keep your heart rate pumping; from feeling the top-of-the-food-chain breathing down your neck to flat-out running for your life. In space, no one can hear you scream. Maybe your bowels.Gameplay is pretty instinctive and well done. Swapping between gadgets in the heat of the moment is clunky and the ‘action’ can be frustrating, but only a minor niggle. There’s NO checkpoints! One of the clever aspects of the game is… NO checkpoints. It harks back to earlier style of gaming where you-die-you-start-again. Save points have been ‘strategically’ planted about the base and will typically pop-up at a sensible, but often desperate, point. A beautiful detail that ensures you not only take the threat seriously, but the game well and truly gets your heart thumping. A genius move where you’ll often slap that SAVE button and feel yourself actually breathe out in real life :)Music, maestro! The music and effects were a real surprise. I’d not read up on this game at all, so getting hit with the original score and effects from the movies, was the icing on the cake for full immersion. Great audio cues to threats, and some good tension-building set pieces. Voice work is great, especially on your Average Joe. Again, authenticity is priority here and they knock it out the park. It’s, like… ALIEN!Characters/plotI think the best thing they could’ve done was have you play Ripley, and essentially, they have. One of the biggest surprises (the game being erroneously called ‘Isolation’) is there’s a host of other characters throughout; some you can trust, some you can’t. Some to guide you and some just to get in the way. You’re far from alone here, and there’s plenty of plots and sub-plots to engage with, and some good chatter to break it up. A couple of nice cameos too :)All-in-all, I thought this game was superb. It was everything I could’ve hoped for from an Alien game and the developers have seriously gone all-in to bring you the most authentic, accurate and brutal game imaginable. Other people have said it could easily qualify as another chapter in the movie canon, and I happily salute that.Be warned, you may lose sleep. And even though the game is potentially wakingly tense and ‘terrifying’, you may be forgiven at half-a-dozen points that you’re almost done, only to find you’ve been playing all night and there’s still no end in sight… so, don’t forget to put the controller down once in a while and get some sleep. At no point during this game could I ever have imagined I’d want to play it again, but I completed this game about a week ago and have been having adrenaline withdrawal since… a real experience. Looking forward to the DLC, and, maybe, you know, playing it again :) Spectacular.

Finally -- a great Alien game! The game is of the survival horror type and succeeds so efficiently in creating an atmosphere of tension, suspense and fear that you will feel as though you've drank about 20 cups of coffee. It's a challenging but rewarding game that really makes you work hard for your victories. I really appreciated the way that this game encourages stealth and survivalist tactics whilst punishing aggressive and gun-ho approaches. Using violence will almost always worsen your situation than improve it. I admit this took some getting used to as so many games require you to just shoot and smash your way to the end.Not the case here -- every individual shotgun round and revolver bullet is precious rather than disposable. The Alien in this game is quite blatantly the star of the show and makes for a formidable foe. It looks flawless and sounds terrifying. The thudding noises it makes as it crawls through the space-station's overhead vents will haunt you as you make your way around. You can never kill the Alien, only distract it with devices or temporarily cause it to retreat when you obtain the flamethrower. The Alien isn't a video game enemy, it isn't a video game boss, it's a video game nemesis -- and that's a rare thing. The space station the game takes place on -- the Sevastapol -- makes for an immersive, oppressive and unwelcoming place with more than a passing resemblance to the ship from the movie. There is still a surprising number of survivors on the station, some are friendly, some are hostile and others are just running for their lives. Finding yourself confronted with a room full of armed looters is one of the many nerve-racking situations Alien: Isolation will put you in. Not just because you're outnumbered and outgunned, but because just one aggressive action from either you or the looters will attract the Alien.PROS:Likeable main characterSuperb AIAlien looks greatAuthentic and reminiscent of the filmLots of replay valueSuperb graphics and use of score and sound-effectsMinimalist screen HUD makes for a more cinematic game play experienceOriginal cast of actors from the movie returned for the making of this gameCONS:There's no sequel in the works and sounds as though there never will be.Marlow's part of the campaign being playable seemed unnecessary and would have preferred it to have been a cinematic cutscene instead.NEUTRAL:Steep learning curve and unforgiving of mistakesWill ratchet up your anxiety to almost unbearable levels

This is a very good video game to be appreciated for what it does deliver. For most players who like suspense or similar It should keep you interested all or most of the way from mission one through to mission nineteen.POSSIBLE SPOILERS:For me when I came to the end of the game on my first play through my first expression was "Phew that was awesome" then after a few moments as a gamer and a lover of the Dead Space series (mainly Dead Space 1) and jump scares I started to think of things that I felt was missing in the game or just didn't feel right for me and is the only reason not to offer a full five star review. As much as this game is titled Alien that is where the similarities end between this game and say Colonial Marines, the latter is a first person shooter, Alien Isolation is more about survival and mission completion rather than a full blown survival horror, Stealth and distractions worked the best for me and a free tip.. NEVER RUN.1: For the MAJORITY of the game only one alien to contend with, yes there is a scene were the game shows more but not likely to kiss you anytime soon. The space station is huge so why does it feel like the alien is following you nearly all the time2: The alien has an extremely long tail, no way was it that long in the alien movies, it always walks or runs rather like a man in a rubber suit (hmmm), I expected the alien to crawl on the ceiling or walls, again like in the movies/colonial marines video game but if you can ignore these facts and just play the game the alien and the feel of the game is believable enough. For some the alien can appear scary, my view is respect it but not fear it, if you carefully, listen to sounds of the alien going into and out of vents and clever use of the motion tracker and correct timing of your gadgets you can for the most part stay alive, however there are other threats to contend with. Best of luck playing the game without dying (ha ha).3: This game loves to make you keep back tracking which can for some start to feel a bit tedious, for me it was not too big of a problem.End of the day its a great game well worth having in your collection, the graphics and sound on the Xbox 360 is amazing and with the various DLC on offer replay value is good =)

That's what they must have thought after Colonial Marines was released. Someone sat down and thought, we can do better than that, the movie franchise deserves better than that, and the billion dollar games industry must do better than that. So they went ahead and produced this master piece. To get the best out of it, buy the Venom vibration headset, and turn it up, sit alone in a dark room. I am a thirty something and I remember one of the first Alien games on PS1 when green monsters ran at you to mow down with a pistol firing orange marbles. I promise you this game is something else. There is no Hollywood movie or any film EVER made that can arouse emotions like playing this game can.Emotions like loneliness, anticipation, and fear. At one point it became uncomfortable and I had to take off the headset, turn the light on and grab a beer. I'm not a wussy its just my pulse was thrashing and I needed to remind myself that its cool. Just a game. If you are young and like to blow things up and shoot guns, stick with COD. If your an old fashioned gamer who enjoys thinking and loved the Alien franchise, this is for you. Just make sure you use HDMI for your screen and must MUST use a head set or decent speakers because the ambience and sound effects of this title is everything. The Sevastopol bangs and clatters thundering in your ear and you have to turn around really quickly to see if anything is there. And then silence, more creeks, more daunting music from the original Alien, every time a door hisses open exposing a dark room or corridor you panic. Five stars no question. I feel like giving it one star for fun because sometimes it just not fun, Its truly petrifying. But that's what this game has done, set a bench mark for others to follow. It makes Dead Space feel like Sonic The Hedgehog. Enjoy!

Amanda Ripley, daughter of one Ellen Ripley, has been trying to find out what happened to her mother for 15 years when this story takes place. The Black Box of the "Nostromo" has been recovered and taken to Sevastopol station, where it waits for collection by Weyland-Yutani. Samuels, a Synthetic, offers Ripley a place on the ship going to collect it-so she goes along. But when they get to Sevastopol station, something has gone very wrong. The station doesn't respond to attempts at contact, there is evident damage and debris free-floating and Ripley and team have to transfer to the station by donning space suits and jetting over. Which is where their problems start...The battered,run-down and leaky old-tech look of both ship and station comes straight from the 1979 film. Ripley actually discovers old tape recordings in places she can listen to to find out what is going on. The station is in complete chaos, with systems down, lighting not working properly, elevators locked, doors sealed in a way which can only be bypassed with blowtorches or the right gear and survivors running for their lives while, often, shooting first and asking questions later. When the Xenomorph finally shows up, you assume you've seen the worst-you haven't. Poor Amanda has ended up in a place that even Ellen would have had trouble surviving, and things only get worse as the game goes on and you explore more of the station. Weyland-Yutani are hell-bent on getting Xenomorph samples-and they will do anything to acquire them. As ever, they and their people are likely more dangerous than the Xenomorph-both at once is almost unthinkable.Fortunately, Amanda is very much her mothers daughter. And as an engineer, she has options Ellen didn't. This game shows what that means. Play it and see.

Firstly, I normally can't stand first-person games and have avoided them for years. I find the field of view too restrictive, humans have approximately a 180-degree field of view when looking forward and understandably games cannot recreate this. Secondly, I am also not a massive fan of the Alien series, having only recently watched the series for the first time, but I did find them quite enjoyable. With this in mind, for £19.99 I thought I'd give Alien: Isolation a go, and am glad I did. The atmosphere of the game seems spot-on, with lots of "retro-futuristic" technology on display - monochrome CRT monitors and cables running all over the place. The point of the game is very much on stealth and avoiding conflict, with very limited resources when it comes to firepower. This is both the game's strength and weakness. At times the game is quite terrifying, hiding in cupboards watching your motion scanner in the hope your hunter doesn't spot you. The feeling of helplessness when cornered, with no cover and little prospect of fending off your attacker, especially those who can kill you with one assault, is exactly how an Alien game should be. But even on the easiest setting, some stages quickly descend into a try-die-try-die-try-succeed cycle, with evading your enemy being as much luck as judgement. Though the game area is quite large, it is usually clear where you are heading and what your objective is, though at times I referred to an online walkthrough through sheer frustration. The game is not perfect but I can recommend Alien: Isolation to fans of the film series. At times highly frustrating, but often rewarding, and the atmosphere of the game is exactly how it should be.

“Alien: Isolation” is a first-person action-adventure videogame, taking place within the sci-fi universe of the ‘Alien’ franchise. The story is set some 15 years after the events depicted in Ridley Scott's “Alien” movie (from 1979) and follows the character of Amanda Ripley, daughter of the film’s protagonist Ellen Ripley, as she seeks to investigate the disappearance of her mother. The gameplay emphasises stealth within a survival horror environment, in which the player must avoid – and outsmart – a single alien creature. It’s a very atmospheric game, involving a tense and distressful situation … and is a lot of fun!The player must explore a space station, completing various tasks, while evading the alien. There are enemies to challenge and fight – such as other humans and androids. And you progress by using a limited number of weapons: a revolver, a shotgun, a bolt gun, and a flamethrower. By drawing on the source material – the “Alien” film – both in terms of how the game looks and sounds, this really does feel like a continuation of the story from the movie. So for fans of Scott’s classic “Alien”, this videogame is a welcome instalment (and is far, far better than other recent games in the series, e.g. “Colonial Marines”).This game is an 18 – and it’s intended for adults. If you enjoy first-person survival horror games, I thoroughly recommend this. It has a good story, great graphics, and is highly immersive. I found it very enjoyable – and, on the higher setting, rather difficult (for if the alien spots you, you’re dead)! On the PS4 it looks fantastic and plays brilliantly.

If you are a fan of Alien franchise and a gamer then this game is definitely for you.Let me be clear that this will probably be the most scariest game that you will ever play in your entire gaming life.Every sound, every movement is a sphincter contracting moment.I played this game with the lights off once and a set of headphones on, it was about 10 minutes before I paused the game, took the headphones off, turned the lights on and had to go out of the room where I remained for about twenty minutes having to smoke a cigarette and calm down. This is the best game that has ever been created from the alien universe. No big F off guns or anything to help you survive from the get go.Just you and your senses and your will to survive. The graphics are excellent and the original sound track from alien is an awesome addition to this game.I wish that other people would play this game with me, having someone to tell you that it's ok and it's just a game. You play it alone as Amanda Ripley, and the first time you see it, you will be scared, don't think you won't be. The following times you meet it (it will be anywhere) you will be scared and even more scared. These creatures were created to kill, and this is what this does over and over and over....Be warned, you will need to ensure that you are prepared to play this game.. Advisable to have spare underwear after each Xbox session. And one last thing, you will never ever walk underneath ventilation grills or airducts ever again.

The game that rebooted the survival horror franchise in general that paved the way for other games that pushed the boundaries such as RE7. Isolation is a fantastic original idea that turned into one of my all time favourite games. This game is pure heart pounding from start to finish, the graphics are top notch, voice acting is fantastic. Atomspheric and scary to play. I would recommend this to anyone. I am extremely disappointed in SEGA for not greenlighting Isolation 2 as I know Creative Assembly wanted to do a sequel.SEGA blamed poor sales yet forget a simple fact. The horror genre across all medias in general was in a slump before Isolation was released. The last Alien game was commerical was a flop (C Marines)and the last movie was awful and failed to pull in respectable numbers. So the game was likely to have a slow but steady climb with sales. Hitting 2.4 million sales in 5 months was a fantastic achievement specially for a design company that wasn't as well known as it is today. For the story alone AI deserves a sequel and anyone who is anyone needs to play this game!I urge you to pick up a copy whether Disc or digital, it is worth your time and I suggest to get the full experience play on hardest difficulty, noise detection and head tracking (If using the Playstation Camera, PSVR, Kinnect or Vive/Oculus)

Alien: Isolation really captured the essence of the first Alien film. The game puts you into the futuristic retro lore of the franchise in a unique way as this game is all about survival unlike previous Alien instalments that focuses on combat horror. Here hiding and quick thinking are essential to stay alive as the Alien A.I. Can turn it’s gaze or suddenly change its path whilst searching for you at a moments notice, making you feel that the ‘perfect organism’ really is hunting you. There are also the lower and more predictable enemies to deal with like the humans or Androids but the Alien May show up even in these conflicts and turn the tide either in your favour or not.The game feels and sounds like something out of the original film with the original music by Jerry Goldsmith incorporated into the games own soundtrack whilst still keeping you on your toes.A must have for an Alien fan or a survival horror game fan. A reccomemded difficulty to play would be the Hard mode as the stakes are raised to a realistic level. The free downloadable content in the ‘Nostromo Edition’ also lets players play as members of the original doomed Nostromo crew whilst confronting the original Alien in the heart pounding vents of the Nostromo ship which is perfectly designed from the film.

Great game. Just finished the story mode, and it is tense! To start with I thought they'd just taken elements from Bioshock and Dead space to make an Alien game, but as I got further into it I realised it was so much more. The AI for the Alien in particular is brilliant, and lurks around ominously whilst you cower in a locker, peering through the grille. He is a beast! And his superiority in combat is well realised here. The use of the motion tracker is classic stuff, whilst the limitations of the weaponry and the scarcity of ammo make this a very tense affair.I'm a big fan of the films and it is great to play a game that realises the feel of the movie so well. There is enough here from the films that plays like classic alien, with a plausibility to the settings and tech etc. that feels very credible and true to the original material. Whilst the introduction of 'Working Joe' androids is also very good, (which are surprisingly scary too) which along with the human enemies make for some varied encounters. It is also a very long game, so great value. And the pace never lets up. They manage to keep the game varied and interesting throughout, which is an achievement in itself.Great stuff. Very impressed. Best game I've played in ages.

A really enjoyable game. It captures the feel of the original Alien film perfectly. From the clunky retro style technology littering the station to sound effects and atmospheric lighting. This game could have been made by a young Ridley Scott. It also offers you hours upon hours of gameplay. Something which is sadly lacking in a lot of games these days. There are a couple of things I found could have been improved on. Firstly as a survival horror game there isn't enough variation in your options for survival. Either wait out the Alien / Android in a hidey hole, lob a distraction into another room and leg it or show it the business end of a flame thrower. You pretty much repeat that throughout the entire game.Having said that the exploration, tension when there are no hidey holes and atmosphere still make this a brilliant game. The game has a bit of a slow start but it's well worth srticking with. Enjoy!

Agree with much of what's already been written in the 5* reviews. Don't believe IGN/Gamespot - not sure what they're looking for in games anymore. It's true that there's a lot of exploration, and the puzzles aren't particularly tricky or original (at least so far, I'm about 6 hours in). Not everything works in the game dynamics - the circuit rewiring is pointless and doesn't gain you an advantage - so it's only 4* for me.HOWEVER...They've done such a good job with the tone. It's genuinely unnerving and at times out-and-out terrifying. You become so numbed to most video game violence, there's something refreshing about creeping around a hospital bay for 25 minutes dodging the alien, getting all the way to the exit - only to find she's hiding in a vent above you. The animations where the alien gets you are fantastic - you'll really want to avoid her next time!
