Aesop’s Hwyl (a Welsh word meaning “a sense of happiness and fun”, & pronounced (loosely) as “who-eel”) is all about the sacred Hinoki cypress, native to Japan. The “tori” gates (⛩) of Japan’s Shinto shrines, that mark the transition from our world to the spiritual one, are made exclusively of this aromatic wood. This wonderfully sturdy wood is also used to craft communal baths, as well as onsens.There are many fragrances that utilise hinoki essence, and I own several (8 to date), and Hwyl is by far my favourite of the bunch, with Comme des Garçons’ Kyoto a close second.Hwyl’s accords consist of hinoki, frankincense, vetiver & thyme. It’s a beautiful, simple mix that is as timeless as it is genderless.
