This is a neat little reel that works well for me. I use it with 6ft, trigger-handled American baitcaster rod, rated for 3/8-1 oz lures & 8-20lb line - they seem well matched. I use a fairly heavy monofilament line with this reel - just like many/most American bass pros - rather than braid. As this is a relatively inexpensive baitcaster, many people that purchase & use this reel will be new to baitcasting reels. Using a baitcasting reel is more complicated than using a fixed spool spinning reel - but it only takes a few minutes to learn what is required, and then practice (which can be done in a field).Using a baitcaster takes some practice. Certainly, study up on youtube which has several instructional videos on:- (1)setting up your new baitcaster reel (I *highly recommend* you watch this one) and- (2) casting/using a baitcaster -- oh, also ..- (3) watch the video on clearing birds nests easily (hopefully you won't need it often but when you do there is a surprisingly simple technique for clearing birds nests, which is well worth learning). You basically need to configure 3 things when you first set up, and then you just tweak them (mainly just the magnetic drag setting) thereafter, as you learn/practice or when you change to a significantly heavier/lighter lure. I found that a relaxed American-style side cast works best - the big overhead casts typical with long British rods are simply unnecessary and counter-productive. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this little rig casts as far as my long lure rod & reel (which uses expensive braid) with a given lure (I know because I've tested it).I use mine it a slightly stiff, premium 14lb monofilament line, because I've find that 14lb+ is required for sea plugging, to ensure the line has decent wear-and-tear characteristics around abrasive rocks, sufficient strength to deal with weed snags. The premium line I chose does this without being excessively thick and it is also a little stiffer than non-premium lines (I believe they make it with more cross-polymer bonds, which increases the strength & stiffness of a given thickness of line). For freshwater, you might want to use a lighter line (6-12lb perhaps).I use it with fairly heavy plugs, around 1oz (14g-40g, mainly 16g-32g) - because I find they cast very well (i.e. very far) and almost all of my favourite lures are this size :). I particularly like using this rod-reel combination with top-water lures - American-style (& top water lures snag less when there is weed around). The rod I use is rated perfectly for this and has a nice stiff tip that is just perfect for working poppers, and walking-the-dog lures - tremendous fun. Just like those American TV shows & youtube videos :).I use the combo from shore & beach but I reckon this would be a perfect set-up from a boat (this is an American style of fishing, and Americans generally fish from boats), possibly a kayak and from raised areas, like slipways &, maybe, piers. Being small & compact, this rig is quick & easy to stash in the car, and to take out as soon as you arrive near the sea (that's what I do on holiday - the big rods often take too much unpacking for a short stop but this rig is always ready to go), so pack it on top, or somewhere easy to reach (behind a seat perhaps). Americans usually leave the reel attached to the rod, often with the line thread through the rings and attached to a lure - so the rigs is ready to fish immediately. I do the same except I break my rod (it has 2 sections) and just leave a swivel quick snap-clip on the end (to avoid hook snags). For beginner anglers, I would suggest that you start with a fixed spool reel instead - much simpler and forgiving. However, I think this is a good reel for those new to baitcasting and wishing to try it. It has an impressive specification, with all the feature of more expensive reels. I figure the roller-bearing is worth 2-4 regular bearings - it is a very important feature that I look for in the reels I buy, as it adds considerable strength, smoothness and longevity. To maximize enjoyment & minimize problems, read & understand the instructions and watch the videos first. Be patient and practice casting it, which can be done in a field or large garden (please don't cast towards people, or with people immediately around you when casting - 1oz of lead can be a seriously dangerous projectile).BTW IMPORTANT: I am right-handed. When I cast, I hold the rod & reel with my right-hand. When I reel in, I hold the rod with my right-hand and reel-in with my left-hand, therefore I use and recommend the LH (wind) variant. That LH means left-hand *wind*, not for left-hand users. [Some right-handers prefer to wind in with their right hand too but I think that is unusual,, it requires that you swap hands with the rod after casting.]

I always wanted a baitcaster reel, but they were usually quite expensive, and I wasn't sure if I want to spend lots of money on a reel I won't be able to use (they are not easy to use at all). Then I found this little marvel :) I've read reviews, watched some videos on YouTube, and read the product reviews here . Lot's of people said it's garbage - that it didn't work, or they got birds nets each casts etc...I really do not get it ..... Did they bother at all to watch the videos on how to tune, and how to cast with these ?I literally spent 30 minutes watching some Bass anglers from the US showing how to tune these reels, how to spool them, how to remove backlashes (aka birds' nests), and how to cast, while I was waiting for the delivery.Once I got the reel delivered,I spooled it with a Guru Pulse 10lb mono, put it on a rod, attached a practice weight (12g - as most of my lures are that size/weight). Fiddled with the settings for about 10 minutes, and started practising casts (different type casts - overhead, backhand, under arm swing etc). I maybe got one or two bigger backlashes when my practise lure has hit an obstacle before landing at target - but that was not a problem, as they were not completely dramatic. And knowing how to remove them, after watching those videos, it took me 2 minutes to be back at casting practice. Then I practised the fine tuning (with spool tension knob and magnetic break), and I got it just right. Each cast - just perfect not even a slight backlash. I did also practice using my thumb to slow down the reel in the last phase of the lure's flight, and that worked like a charm too !Generally what I can say is this:- despite the initial learning curve, and the fact that reels of this type do not have a spool clip to allow you for precise casting (I utilise the clip on my carp reels all the time), I was still able to cast very accurately , to the same spot over and over again. In fact by the end of the 1h test session - I felt like I've been using baitcasters forever.- the spool tension knob is a bit difficult to get the right tension, but then - it's a cheap baitcaster, what do you expect. I was however able to compensate it with the magnetic break.- the drag is well - cheap - but not impossible to set correctly as well, so not a big deal. (It would be if this reel was expensive though). It is a brilliant entry level baitcaster, that doesn't break your budget. I know for sure that after a while I might buy one of the better models from this line, most likely the Silver Max.For me this reel is just perfect (lure fishing, with medium/small lures (10 - 15g) ).BTW. the important part is also what rod are you using (what kind of action etc)... This reel is a low profile reel, so it needs to be used with a casting rod, not a spinning rod.The rod I'm using with this reel is the Shakespeare Ugly Stick GX2 caster rod (not the spinning one), Medium 6'6" (1/4-5/8 ounce (which is roughly 7g - 21g) lure weight )

The price is very good for the reel. I love the double handle, I've always preferred them for some reason, perhaps the ease of just grabbing either one and start reeling it in.The breaking system seems pretty smooth the star brake is easy to adjust and not in the way. I have no idea what the magnetic break supposedly does when casting or whatever.I found one thing that was a bit iffy for me. The casting drag which you adjust to prevent birds-nests doesn't deal with that heavy loads, that said this is a tiny reel so it should be expected light casting weights.I did however discover that if you unscrew the drag, you can see the tiny gold coloured plate sitting in the screw cap.I wiggled it out with a tool, took one of my guitar picks of about .73 mm and cut it to the same shape using a nail clipper. Fitting it underneath the gold coloured plate. Now when you screw it back on, you can apply just a tad more pressure to the drag allowing you to cast a tiny bit heavier lures. Of course if you do this, be advised that it's at your own risk, you could end up ruining your reel if unlucky, so be aware if you have the same issues as me.Other than that, great reel, good for the money. Fishing doesn't have to be expenssive.

I ordered this reel as my first bait caster/multiplier reel. I then tried to cancel the order as I looked at the image which portrays a right hand wind mechanism. I am right handed and wind with the left. I was too close to delivery date to cancel so started looking for other bait casters. I could not find an affordable left hand winding reel. Excepted the fact I will need to learn how to use the opposite hand. Until I opened the box and a very welcome surprise the image was wrong. It is left hand winding. I have put line on it and have booked my next pike fishing session. Update to follow.

This review is for Abu part no. 1140451. This is a very good little baitcasting reel for the money. Has a line capacity of 175m of 0.30 mono which is not quoted in the specs on the Amazon listing. Please note that it is intended for baitcasting and lure work and as such is used on top of the rod. This means a right-handed fisherman needs a left-hand wind reel to facilitate one handed casting without changing hands for the retrieve. I would recommend it be paired with a 5-50g baitcasting rod of no more than 7'6" (2.28m).

This is a fantastic little reel. However I have sent it back only because the photo clearly shows a right hand retrieve reel and the one I received was a left hander. So disappointed with that however the reel is top notch ( Very Small ) but very well made and silent, I will be ordering this again in the blink of an eye as soon as I can be assured it is a right hand retrieve reel.

Shiney, compact, great to hold, my only gripe is that there were no right handed reels left.My daughter uses this one, you can get quite a bit of line onboard at a lower poundage, it's very smooth and the brake wheel is easy. A fiddley moment when trying to thread the line through the feeder hole but I should've put my glasses on.It's an Abu and it's a bargain at this price.

Nice quality reel, I fish with the handle to the right so it's perfect for me, it works well, has a quality build feel about it too.feeding line on is fine, make sure you use a thin guage line, the mechanism for casting is brilliant, comes with instructions so don't worry, you can easily read and practice that perfect cast.....

The spool Is tiny. Overall the reel is about half the size of an Ambassaduer 6500, but the size of the the spool seems to be less than an eighth of the size of the spool on the other reel. It still feels like an Ambassaduer though.Multiplier reels should be fished on top of the rod, unlike fixed spool reels.

HAVING SUFFERED A STROKE LAST YEAR,AND HAVING 3FINGERS AMPUTATED FROM LEFT HAND IN SEPTEMBER,WAS FINDING DIFFICULTY CASTING ,THIS REEL WAS RECOMENDED TO ME BY A FRIEND AS HAVING A LOT OF BOTHER CASTING,THIS REEL IS SMALL AND LIGHT AND EASY TO OPERATE,CANT WAIT FOR MARCH TO COME TO START USING IT.....

7.10.2011

This reel is great. It has good drag settings and it's very simple to cast. If you find it hard to cast there's a video on youtube that tells you a step by step guide of how to cast it. I advise you to get this reel. Tight Lines.

Neat little entry level bait caster, not up to the ABU quality of old but that did not bother me as its only going to be used for occasional fun fishing and anyhow expensive angling tackle catches more fishermen then fish.
