Many years ago I can remember my late grandmother and my Mum using this, but I could never remember what it was called, but could always remember the still and design of the label. So when I was looking for a fragrance for a gift the other day, guess what I found out the fragrance I loved as a child was called “4711 Original Eau de Cologne Splash”, so I was really please and decided to treat myself. It arrived well packed from Amazon, so the bottle was still in one piece. :-)They still use the same lovely branded boxes that I remember from childhood. The cologne is in a glass bottle with the branded label on the front. The firm still uses a metal top which is in gold and red and has a red branded label round the lid,(the top was very tight so it took a little time to open it) and the 4711 is on top of the lid.4711 is a traditional German Eau de Cologne by Maurer & Wirtz which has been around for 222 years, the firm has a large range that also includes deodorant, aftershave and soap. :-)It uses essential oils and has an aromatheraputic effect. The top notes are orange oil, peach, basil, bergamot and lemon. Its middle notes are cyclamen, lily, melon, jasmine and bulgarian rose. The base notes are patchouli, tahitian vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss and cedar. It’s a classic and can be used by both women and men.I can remember as a child when I didn’t feel well or had trouble sleeping it was always something my late grandmother and Mum used to place on my temples to help relax me.I still find this relaxing and calming today, (so besides using lavender I can also use this as well).

To my (slightly fertile..) mind, this looks as if it could be a 300ml bottle of Gin, or some other aromatic distilled spirit, such is the packaging, appearance and scent! I haven't tasted it though....and probably won't (and neither should you!)I bought this simply to have a cheap, non-offensive every-day cologne to splash on my face, neck and bald head after shaving in the morning and it's certainly up to the job. It has a light, citrusy, non-descript scent which doesn't linger for too long or follow you around. It definitely lasts longer than a few minutes though and I can still detect it 6-7 hours later if I wet my skin. Despite the alcohol content, it's not very astringent so doesn't really sting or dry out your skin.It does leave my skin feeling soft and refreshed though. However, if I'm going out somewhere special or need something with more longevity, I'll wear something else.It was just over £15 for 300ml and whilst that is decidedly cheap for the quantity received, you will end up using it more liberally. It's the sort of scent you could easily splash on at work in the middle of the afternoon to freshen yourself up without receiving any negative comments. To put it another way, you could get in a lift with other people straight after applying it and they'd definitely all still be conscious when the doors re-opened!

Packaging/bottle**A very average bottle with the 4711 logo on it in green and gold. The label looks quite old fashioned and expensive.**The top notes are**orange oil, peach, basil, bergamot and lemon.**The heart notes are**cyclamen, lily, melon, jasmine and Bulgarian rose.**The base notes are **patchouli, Tahitian vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss and cedar. The first notes you are hit with are the top notes.. quite a refreshing citrusscent. You then have quite a fresh smell with the floral notes coming through.. not too floral though to make this a girlie perfume. A more sandalwood and musk smell then comes through. This is a scent that manages not to be too feminine or too masculine. The staying power for this was very average at around 2-3 hours.I would recommend this for older people- this seems to be a favourite with older members of my family. Saying that since it is unisex I would maybe consider buying it for a younger male. I think there are far too many other scents on the market for me to consider wither buying it again or getting it for someone else.**Overall**Clean scent slightly spicy/ woody .I think this would appeal more to those who don't like an overly feminine scent citrus

This is a classic product I have used for many years. 4711 was worn by many generations of my family especially my Victorian grannie, great aunt and great uncle all used this cologne which has been on the market since 1792 It is a lightly fragranced cologne suitable for both sexes although it has a masculine smell. It’s particularly good after shaving. This is my daily aftershave and I get many compliments about it. My Wifelette also likes the fragrance which is an added bonus. As for the price, it is considerably cheaper here than on the high street. I decant the cologne into a plastic atomiser which makes it easier to use and I think more economical, although at these prices you can be fairly liberal!.I suffer from occasional migraines, and I find 4711 cool stick, also available here comforting when rubbed liberally on the forehead and temples. Again it is cheaper than many menthol sticks available from a chemist, and it lasts just as long. I can recommend this product, which has, by the way been around 1792, I wonder how many modern, overpowering mens fragrances will stand the test of time.

I hadn't used 4711 since sharing my grandma's some 20 years ago but when I came across a very reasonably-priced bottle here on Amazon, I was inspired to buy some for myself. Thankfully, it hasn't changed and is still the light, lemony, summery classic I remember. This works well for both men and women and is equally delightful used as a cologne or on linen. I've been buying it regularly since, and find it one of several things that help to soothe during a migraine attack.U-boat crew antecedents aside, if you're looking for a gift for a die-hard 'Rocky Horror' fan you can't get much better than a bottle of this classic scent: whose number is one of FranknFurter's tattoos! This 25ml watch bottle is one of the smaller package designs (and comes in splash-on form,so the scent comes out quite quickly... though it's light enough that this isn't too much of a problem) and its design/shaping make for an attractive dressing table piece. However, if you like 4711 and use it regularly this is far from the most economical way to purchase.

I really love the smell of this scent - I'm a fan of citrus scents, and the citrus of this, combined with the bergamot and peach make it truly refreshing. It's also a classic scent, so it might also speak to the memory side of your brain! This bottle gives a good amount. However, the neck of the bottle is so small that you can pretty much tip it upside down and nothing comes out. Applying it to the skin this way does not therefore give enough scent to last - I feel it stays for a few short hours. I find that decantering into an atomizer makes a difference, as you can spray more onto you over a larger area. The difficulty is that you can't simply pour the liquid from the bottle into the atomizer because the neck is so slim,so I've been siphoning it into the atomizer with an extremely slim straw (which is, unfortunately, shorter than the bottle, so I'm going to have to find another solution once I use up enough to make the remaining liquid unattainable..).

A distinctive, almost classic eau de cologne that has been around for decades & clearly stood the test of time in terms of popularity, though not as readily available on the high street as it once was.I bought this for my elderly aunt who wanted something light & fresh &, crucially, that was not in spray form, as arthritis in her hands prevents her from using one.I was pleased to find this vaguely citrus scent in a decent-size sturdy glass bottle, described as a splash on. Being an eau do cologne, it fades sooner than parfum (esp on a person with dry skin) so it's nice to be able to splash it around liberally to replenish the scent.Another advantage of eau de cologne is that it is less expensive than concentrated perfume,& the size of the bottle represented good value for money.A scent to suit all ages & certainly recognisable to many of a certain age, I'm sure, as a sort of limbic memory jogger.Read full review...

I bought a bottle of 4711 after discovering that it was very popular in the 1950s, which is my favourite decade. I highly recommend this product because I think the scent is a delightful, timeless classic. I would, however, try the scent before buying this product because it smells slightly different to what I imagined. I think it smells very citrusy and it has a sort of musty tang to it when it is first applied; the ,longer you leave it on, the nicer the scent becomes. It is strong when you first apply it but then becomes more subtle by the end of the day. This bottle of 4711 is extremely good value-I haven't seen it cheaper anywhere else; it also lasts a long time because I have been using it for months now and I still have lots left!the packaging is wonderful, it has a traditional and grand air to it and looks lovely on my shelf. I highly recommend this product.

Ok, so on first impressions you're hit by a wall of what seems like artificial zested lemons - reminded me a bit of a Mr Muscle lemon kitchen cleaner at first, however, just wait, as the initial hit disipates to show grapefruit then a subtle but still definitely there Neroli, gorgeous. On the dry down you get more spice and green notes, but of course it's very light. It won't linger like a concentrated perfume. For the price it's great as exactly what it is: an eau de cologne, the original (if not somewhat modified formula) no less. I find this excellent as a clearing spritz - if you're feeling foggy or walking into a stale room, this lifts and clears the space. It would actually make a great air freshener too.So, for the price, it's worth a whirl, it's something you can take with you to use on yourself or to freshen rooms. It's light but lifting.

I've gone through quite a few bottles of this over the years and decided to buy my 20 year old son one as a stocking filler for Christmas this year (yes it's that time of the year again!).I couldn’t mention 4711 without saying it is the quintessential and the original- eau de Cologne. The recipe has barely altered in hundreds of years. Here we have lavender - rosemary - neroli - bergamot - lemon and orange. The initial application does tingle a freshly shaven face but that soon dissapates to leave a very nice fresh clean crisp scent. I often splash a tad of this about just out of the shower before bedtime. It doesn’t last long on the skin at all,but a quick re-splash will top up this lovely fresh fragrance and at this price for 300mls it's almost cheap enough to bathe in! I love it.A must have in your fragrance collection.

We first saw this on one of Michael Portillo's Continental Railway Journeys. The interview with the firm, his description of the scent and the reaction of people he tried it on, made us interested in trying it ourselves. We expected it to be really expensive but when we looked on Amazon the prices were much better than we feared. This smells lovely - it's got a real citrus tang to it and it wakes your senses but still leaves you feeling calm. Both of us use it and it smells good on both of us. The bottle is easy to hold (if a little big for a woman with small hands). We pour it into our hand and then rub it into our body. The scent doesn't last all day but then it isn't meant to and it's easy enough to put some more on your neck and wrists.I see us continuing to buy this and other 4711 items into the future.

Wanted a cheap but classic scent I could use after shaving as an alternative to more expensive 'special occasion' perfumes. Ordered a 100ml of this after reading about its history and positive reviews as I didn't want to get a larger size only to discover I didn't like it. Anyway, the good news is that I do. The scent is lemony fresh and reminds me of Turkish barber shops. It is just like some lemon cologne I bought in that country some years ago. I had to stop using it as a girlfriend at the time didn't like it (maybe not everyone will) yet the good news is we broke up so it doesn't matter now! Anyway, it isn't the best in terms of longevity yet that may be expected. I also love the oldie design of the bottle. It may be that I'll order a larger one in future.

TLDR:+ Amazing and refreshing scent, perfect for summers.+ Great as an aftershave or for bed linen.- Poor performance, but to be fair that's not what this is intended for.I absolutely love this scent, reminds me of a barber shop for some reason. This is a light and sparkly neroli that's perfect for warmer weather, unfortunately this cologne concentration does not last long on my skin—I get 30 minutes to an hour maximum, so I use this almost exclusively as an aftershave. Amazing scent though! For those complaining, is not an EDT or EDP, it's a cologne splasher so don't expect long lasting performance from it—that's not the point. If you want a similar neroli fragrance that lasts a bit longer, check out Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino.

an absolutely unbeatable price for 300ml of this unique fragrance, bought instantly just for the memories it brings back, hot summer days as a young child back in the seventies, running and playing in the fields near my great aunts house, came in pouring with sweat and she dabbed it on my my temples, forehead and neck to cool me down, the aroma stayed with me forever, i got a bottle for my mum too because when she was young, she did the same for her and all our family over the years, tears in my eyes as i write this, and fond memories of a different world and times we'll never see again. still the same as its always been, the same unmistakable fragrance in an ever changing world, please dont ever change it.
