Traditional mice weren't really designed for people. They came about as a result of technology research at Xerox's Palo Alto research labs, and became widely adopted for PC and Apple computers without any great thought being given to what long-term damage they could be doing to their users. The "hand-twisted-back" posture the traditional mouse forces users to adopt can damage the carpal muscle through continual compression, and this causes pain (sometimes thought of as a form of RSI).This 3M mouse allows the user to put their hand in a relaxed posture, on its side with the thumb resting over a rocker switch that acts as the left and right mouse buttons, and the two middle fingers over another button that is middle button. The instructions say it takes some getting used to; I was amazed by how easy it is. You are advised to adjust the mouse scroll speed so you hardly need to move the mouse. After about 20 minutes, I felt completely at home with this new mouse. It feels so natural, and it has already made a big difference to the pain I had begun to develop as a result of twenty years of using a Microsoft mouse. I wish I had been using one of these mice all along, so I hadn't developed the pain in the first place! The one down-side is there's no wheel to scroll up and down, but middle-clicking in many programs puts you into an auto-scroll mode, which is actually an easier way to scroll. It's a USB optical mouse, with a PS/2 adapter if you need it. You are advised to get the version that your hand best fits into, but there's no guidance - it would be nice to be able to try them both out before choosing. I bought the large version, and it's probably just a smidgeon larger than I would ideally like (I'm a slightly taller than average male). I have had the opportunity to try the small/medium size, and it definitely feels too small for me. It's right-handed mouse, so only good if you use your right-hand for you mouse (I do, even though I'm left-handed).It's not a cheap mouse - but my health is worth it!A couple of notes about build quality:The "joystick" handle of this mouse is held on to the base by four weak internal plastic clips. If you try putting the mouse in a laptop bag (as I did), there's a strong possibility that the handle will break off (and indeed mine did). Thankfully, there is a wide enough surface inside to use superglue to fix the handle back on, which is what I did, and the mouse is fully functional again. There's also a crack between the moulded halves of the handle through which I sometimes see the red LED, which can be annoying. I don't think it would be difficult to block that crack if necessary.

Thing is - I used to get wrist/arm pains a lot from using a mouse, especially if I'd been doing a lot of heavy computer work (like nightmarish cut paste tasks). It only occurred to me the other day that I largely don't get those any more since I changed to a "trackball mouse". Apparently a trackball mouse fixed the problem for me.This thing, well, this mouse, it's sort of like ironing, a bit strange. You have to use your elbow and shoulder to move the mouse which works fine horizontally, quite natural in fact, but vertically you have to move your entire arm back and forth which seems very exaggerated for a mouse. I didn't like that.I also don't like the size of the dongle, that's the bit that goes in the usb slot - my trackball has a "nano" dongle which means it can stay in the laptop all the time, no danger of it being bent or damaging the usb slot. This one is comparatively huge. I guess I forgot how annoying that is! Not only do you have to remove it every time you put the laptop away but you also have to be super careful not to knock it.It did install instantly with no drivers in win 10.The buttons...well the top one is a rocker switch you press with your thumb, so it's one way for left click, the other for right click. Theres a button on the handle too which is the scroll, it's not a scroll wheel - you press (and hold) it and it changes the mouse cursor to a scroll cursor. I'm not sure why there isn't/can't be a mouse wheel.I can imagine how this would help with serious wrist pains, because somehow it manages to make you use it without moving your wrist. Also your hand is rotated.Overall I'm going to say that (excuse the cliché) this is like marmite, you're either going to think it's life changing or you're going to try it for a bit, then move on. If you're the latter, then try a trackball mouse.

An alternative to traditional mouse designs? 3M think so. As I spend quite a bit of time behind a computer, having a comfortable work station with a poor set of peripherals only contributes to misery. I'm ok with the standard keyboard but you really do not appreciate how much time you spend with a mouse. At first glance, the 3M mouse looks like an amusingly shaped object. It is lighter than you would expect. It has a matt/silk feel which you will either love or loathe. The first thing to note is that this mouse is designed for right handed people (I'm not sure if there is a left-handed version). The handle grip is not movable - you need to move the unit across the desk surface. This could be a problem with people who have limited movement. The top button has two functions - left click it to select or carry out an action whilst the right click brings up a menu. The button that is located further down the handgrip is for scrolling. A battery indicator on the left hand side of the base shows low battery life. Underneath the unit, you have a connect button (which I didn't need to use), on/off switch and battery compartment that takes 2 AAA batteries which comes supplied with the unit. A separate USB dongle connects to your laptop USB or desktop USB ports.Upon plugging in the dongle (which glows red when the mouse is turned on), the laptop running Windows 10 picked it up. In practice, I noticed a difference. I found the top button button very comfortable in operation but the jury is still out on the scroll button - it just doesn't feel natural.I reckon this will take time to get accustomed to.So why only 4 stars? Price. As others have mentioned, charging £80+ is a bit rich. I like the 3M very much. For constant computer users like me, it's a great idea but I would be very hesitant to spend £40+ let alone £80+

Firstly, this did stop the pain I was experiencing in my wrist and index finger! I work at a computer 9-5.30 and now use this all day.It does take some getting used to. When I first started using it, I found it very hard to click where I wanted. I had to put the mouse sensitivity a lot lower than my previous mouse. After a few weeks use I would say I was almost as accurate as a regular mouse (though I imagine you would struggle to play a FPS game well).I find the thumb buttons difficult to click and my thumb joint closest to my palm starts to ache after a while. What I found most annoying is that the easiest button to click (the large side button you can press with any finger)is assigned to middle click and 3M don't appear to offer any way to remap it to primary click. I got around this problem using a 3rd party free program called AutoHotKey, which allowed me to remap the large button to left click. If you're interested I used the following settings:MButton::LButtonLButton::RButtonRButton:: MButtonWith the large button mapped to primary click I love this mouse again! Before I remapped it I was considering buying an alternate ergonomic mouse. I think this mouse would be perfect if the large button was split and could be set to left and right click.SummaryIt fixed my wrist/index finger pain, but my thumb wasn't happy with it until I used a 3rd party app to remap the buttons.

I originally bought one of these mice for somebody suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The feedback was extremely positive.Given that I spend most of my working life in front of (multiple) computers I figure anything that reduces the risk of tendonitis, RSI etc is worth investigating, so I bought one for myself to give it a try. It took no time at all to get used to the more joystick-like feel of this mouse and it is definitely more comfortable than a standard mouse, particularly the deeper ones that force your wrist backwards if used without a padded mouse-mat or similar.Even for people without an existing medical condition,I would recommend this mouse in conjunction with an ergonomic keyboard for anybody who spends long periods at a computer. My only concern about this mouse is the size. I bought the large model even though I don't consider my hands particularly large. Even so, it is only just big enough. I have colleagues who really do have big hands and there is no way this mouse would be large enough for them.I don't know whether other people find the same, but I find that I require slightly more desk space with this mouse than with a standard mouse, something to bear in mind if you have very limited space.

Having used this for a couple of weeks, I have ditched my old mouse on my laptop and mostly stopped using the track pad. It can be a little strange when you swap between keyboard and mouse, as you need to retrain your right hand to rotate, so when I do a lot of typing I tend not to use it. However when you use the mouse for longer periods it is clearly superior and I have found that whenever I need to do a lot of diagrammatic design on gimp, visio and draw.io it is far more accurate and comfortable. The only quibble I have is the size of the dongle that protrudes from the USB port. It seems excessively large especially when compared with those of other wireless mice and keyboards and I fear that it will end up getting snapped. Can't really comment on battery life, as I haven't had it very long, but it probably makes sense to just turn if off when possible, easily done with the off switch on the bottom. It was very easy to set up, all drivers installed immediately and one connected by the connect buttons, it hasn't lost the connection. The range is also very good as I can connect the laptop to a monitor and control it from eight feet away.

Bought this item as I've been suffering from pain on the back of my right wrist and didn't know if it was due to using a conventional mouse or playing squash. After 2 days it was clearly the mouse. This thing is worth every penny and more and is so much easier to use than I thought. Moving the pointer by moving your whole arm actually gives you more control as you have some weight to stop jerky movements. The scroll is easier than a wheel as you just click the lower buttons and drag the mouse in the direction you want to go. The further you move it, the faster it scrolls. No more rolling a wheel all day. You hold the mouse as if you would naturally rest your arm on the desk so I see why it works in terms of relieving stress on the joint. An old fashioned mouse makes you twist your wrist and stretch your fingers, not so with this. If you have wrist pain or a warm itching feeling then it is likely to be the mouse. Buy one even if you don't have pain as it will prevent the discomfort I've had for the past 12 months. Love it. Well Done 3M as usual.ERGONOMIC MOUSE, WIRELESS, LARGE ( Retail Pack)

I use a computer a lot! I have to use a mouse to edit video and create animation so I use the mouse for a lot of hours. This led me to develop a 'Repetitive Strain Injury' to my elbow, or known as 'Mouse Elbow'. I was a little sceptical about this joystick style mouse, but after just a couple of days my RSI has eased immensely.I think the mouse could do with being a little bit more vertical, but this is only a slight bug. It's also a little odd to get used to, but it's miles better than suffering with RSI, I can tell you!! This is how mice should have been invented from the start. I doubt I'll ever go back to a traditional mouse. If you can afford it, you may want to consider a touch screen monitor. This may be something I will look in to for the future. How you can edit video and do 3d animation with a touch screen is something I would like to investigate. Eventually it's probably the way all computing will go either as touch screen or hand gestures.Anyway... This is the perfect product to either stop RSI or prevent it in the first place. A must for a desk-bound workaholic.

I have used a 3M wired ergonomic mouse for years and I wouldn't want to be without one. I was having significant pain and discomfort through my thumb and into my wrist when I was using a standard mouse. Switching to this style of mouse immediately resolved my pain. This wireless version works brilliantly. I got it working within seconds, straight out of the box, no need to refer to the instructions! It was intuitive to me how it worked. It also required no further set up. The speed and accuracy was spot on.If you can afford the additional cost of the wireless then it is an excellent mouse. If you can't then do go for the wired version. If you have any discomfort at all in your hand then this is such a relief to use.So comfortable. It takes about a day to familiarise with but then it just so easy to get on with. Everyone comments when they see it for the first time "is that a joystick!?" but as soon as they try it they can see the comfortable position that it offers.I strongly recommend this style of mouse, it saved me from significant pains.

Although this mouse is not suitable for me due to no scroll wheel - it is certainly very well made and useful for those with medical issues such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) and carpal tunnel syndrome. The device works straight out of the box.1) insert batteries (supplied)2) insert USB dongle into computer3) turn on the mouse (switch on base)4) wait for device to install5) starts working in about 15 seconds. The mouse feels comfortable in the hand and is coated in soft black rubber. The left and right button is on the top, exactly where your thumb rests and so it feels natural. However there is no scroll wheel but instead a large button that runs the length of the handle.I've never been able to use such a scroll very easily. You see the icon on the screen and then move up and down. It always over-shoots the page, for me anyway. You must press quickly to get it to stop in time. Yet, I am getting used to it and more accurate each time I use it.Well made product. Would recommend.

After using a Mac for about a year I developed terrible RSI in my right index finger (I think it was the sidewards swipe that did it!). This also started making using my iPad and iPhone uncomfortable too and drastically dropped my productivity. I use voice dictation as much as possible but still needed to move around a lot of things with the mouse. I tried a couple of ergonomic designs which didn't help that much as they still needed use of the finger. However this one is amazing - just uses the thumb and allows you to rest your index finger completely. The really cool thing is that on the Mac you can still use the Mac mouse with your left hand, giving you the ability to use both mice at once to do things like scroll and select.Like all new things it took some getting used to, depressingly slow at first, but now I'm away and I think faster than I was before!!

About one year after being a full time software developer, I started experiencing really bad pain in my wrists, the joints of my fingers, and sometimes even my elbows. It became unbearable at some point so I changed several things. Some of these are not relevant to this product but I'll go through them anyway in case it helps someone with similar problems:- I bought an adjustable chair for my personal flat because the furnished chairs were way too low compared to the table and it was forcing a bad angle on my arms.- I switched to an ergonomic keyboard at work- I bought this ergonomic mouseIt's a mix of things so it's difficult to attribute the success of the changes to any one of them, but I have tried using a regular mouse a couple of times since then and it quickly becomes disagreeable so I'm pretty confident my ergonomic mouse is helping a lot.

I bought this mouse because of all the reviews saying it helped alleviate wrist problems from rsi/carpal tunnel and it worked for me. I have frequent ache after long periods on the PC. My father suffers severley from carpel tunnel, confirmed by his doctor/hospital and it does not aggrivate it like a normal mouse does. Thank you 3M! Actually looks much cooler in real life than in the photo and will be a talking point for curious envious visitors who will feel like they are back in the stone ages with their wrist hurting mice. It take a little getting used to, and is very accurate, nice feel and high quality. It's not a joystick where you move the paddle, you move the whole unit which is like a mouse at the bottom. This is great for a gift to the person who has everything too. Excellent.

I bought this 3M optical USB ergonomic mouse after having physio for RSI, which had caused numbness in my index finger and stiffness up my hand and forearm. This has been caused by years of mouse use. This ergonomic mouse ensures that your hand remains in a neutral position (unlike the twisting motion required when using the standard mouses). It is surprisingly easy to get used to as it is a natural position for your hand and extremely comfortable. After a month's use I've not suffered any repeat RSI when or after using it. I am delighted with the product and I will be buying another one to use at home since when I reverted to my old rollerball mouse at home, the RSI symptoms returned for a short while.I am delighted with this purchase and would not hesitate to recommend it.
