This is a great set, which is a better set for children than many on the market for a couple of reasons:1. Unlike our first encounter with a cheap, £30 3D pen, this pen has been designed with kids' safety in mind. The cheap pen had very hot plastic coming out and so I didn't feel able to let my children use it in case they burned themselves! This pen is totally different, with special plastic that melts at a lower temperature, so that it doesn't come out hot at all - it is safe to touch straight out of the pen - which is great as children naturally want to feel the plastic quite quickly.2. It is easy to use - there is an on-off switch to activate the heating element inside - when the light turns green,it's ready to use. You just need to pop a stick of ecoplastic in the back of the pen and then press the one big button to press to start the flow of liquid plastic "ink" and it will keep flowing until you press the button again. A double-click of the big button is all that is needed to change colour - the stick pops back out again and in goes the new one (unless you have nearly finished the stick and then you will have to use it until it finishes).3. Because it doesn't set straight away, it means that you can can shape it and smooth it and soften the lines to give some smooth and some textured lines, depending on the look you are going for.4. There are a nice selection of templates, which my children found really helpful in getting the first few things made. It is really good to use these, particularly when they are getting to used to what they can do with the pen right from the basic techniques. There is also a great manual with lots more ideas of projects that you can create and you can draw these straight onto the booklet to get the right shapes and then lift the 2D set shapes off and build them into a 3D model much more easily than you might just trying to come up with the creations out of your imagination.5. You charge up the pen and then you can use it without being plugged in like many other 3D pens, which you need to be plugged in to use.The negatives1. Because it uses a different kind of plastic, you can only buy the refills that are made for this set, which means that you pay the price and although you get 8 different coloured packs with the pen in this set, you will have to buy refills and then you will discover that they aren't cheap.2. Again, due to the different kind of plastic, the flipside of the safe, cooler melting point perhaps, is that it takes longer for the plastic to set hard, which mean that if you want to do in the air doodling - one of the things that looks the coolest when using a 3D pen - it is more difficult than with standard hot pens as the plastic doesn't set fast enough.3. The price is going to put some people off, as it is nearly £135 at the time of writing. If it is on offer, then it is definitely worth investing in this rather than a cheaper, shoddier version, but at this price, it's a bit much even though it is an excellent product.

The 3Doodler is a strange hybrid of old and new. It's basically a fine glue-gun using special plastic "glue" sticks, but the plastic sticks it uses set to a firm plastic with a little give. You use the 3Doodler much like a simple 3D printer, building up shapes in rows of carefully laid out lines of glue. I've uploaded a picture of a 3-sided pyramid key-ring I made. (Not bad for a first effort, but it used about £1.50 worth of art sticks to make.) I also made a die, which was fun to make and a nice novelty. The 3Doodler feels a little like being given a pencil and paper and being told to "draw something". Unless you have some artistic ability and creativity, the 3Doodler may not get much use.The 8 provided silicon stencils provide some ideas, and there's a book that gives more ideas, but the ideas provided seem quite conservative and somewhat two-dimensional. Personally, I find the best way to enjoy the 3Doodler is as a simple hand-held 3D printer for kids. Feed one of the 192 provided glue sticks into the 3Doodler, 8 colours are supplied, and get doodling. But in this case, your doodles can be 3D. Drying time is fairly quick, but there's provision for some bending and shaping after the plastic leaves the gun, and there's some skill involved in judging the distance from the nozzle to where you lay down the glue, to ensure the bead you lay sticks (or not) as desired. Using the gun is simplicity itself: Having charged the 3Doodler via the micro-USB port until the orange light stops flashing and the green light appears, switch the power on, and let it heat up. When the green light is on, feed the art stick in to the back of the 3Doodler until you feel a little resistance, then press the button to start the motor feeding the stick, and press the button to stop again. It's really easy to use and the emerging plastic is not hot enough to cause injury to your hands in use. That's it! The rest is up to you. The 3Doodler is a tool to allow the user to express their creativity. Unless you have those creative skills, the 3Doodler may start out as a cool novelty that you lose interest in when you run out of the provided sticks. Bear in mind a pack of 25 sticks is somewhere between £10-£15, which means each 3Doodler branded stick is going to cost you about 50p. From the pricing of the Super-Mega Pen Set, it seems to me that the 3Doodler itself is pretty much free, and you're paying for the sticks, however other unbranded glue sticks are available for considerably less, and though I'm not sure of their quality, I do like the fact that they are a lot longer.

We've recently had the 'full' adult version of the 3Doodler pen, and have found it good fun and really enjoyed using it. Our youngest child wasn't able to use this, however, so she's now really pleased to get a chance to use the children's version which is aimed at children 8 and over. The concept is quite simple; charge the pen up (unlike the adult version, this doesn't need to be plugged in to use it), the pen in; feed in a coloured plastic filament; the hot pen melts the plastic, and you then draw using this, to build up a 3D plastic model. Change the filament to one of a different colour, and you can then come up with 3D models in more than one colour. The above makes things sound easy -- and the concept is very easy -- but it takes some practice, and a bit of patience is needed. Drawing slowly is best, I've found, and once plastic is drawn, it stays drawn -- it solidifies very quickly.Unlike the adult version, this one is much safer; the plastic is all kept inside the pen, and comes out at a relatively cool temperature so there's much less chance of the user getting burned. It also comes with a projects booklet which suggests things to make; this is very useful, as I know without this, our daughter would just have sat there for a while unable to decide what model to draw. This really is a good thing, and with patience some excellent models can be produced (our daughter has so far made a number of multi-coloured horses, but hopefully she will vary from this soon!). Patience is the key, as you can't rush if you want the end product to look even vaguely recognisable as what's intended. An excellent thing, well-made, and great fun. Five stars.

My son and I had great fun testing this item and it's good for joint adult/child activity.Comes with the pen, a charging lead (you will need a USB plug to hand) and six packs of different coloured plastic straws for inserting into the pen. Also included is a handy instruction booklet with various project ideas plus rubber templates for use with designing. The pen charged from empty battery to full fairly quickly....around an hour. Once charged you simply insert a straw into the me of the pen and have fun. The pen "writes" with the click of a button and stops with a click of the same button....it took a bit of practice to get this right. We tried all the templates but my son most enjoyed doing his own thing and doodling. He enjoyed creating a coaster with a smiley face on it ...we had a template for that in the pack.So far so good...however beware the cost of refills. While we haven't used all the packs and colour scheme yet they are fairly pricy. If you spend a fair amount of money on this (and I have seen it advertised for various prices) then spending three fifths of that cost again on future refills does have an ouch factor....it loses a star for that.Positives.Great for manual dexterity and practice of fine motor skills.CreativeFun.Negatives.The relatively high cost of refills when compared to the cost of the initial kit.

I absolutely love this product as I'd never seen or even heard of a 3D pen. My daughter is very creative and we all like making models so this is a very original and different thing to try for us.There are apparently adult versions of these, I don't know if these are better or more professional but this is safe for children in the fact that the filament comes out touch warm and not scolding hot which is amazing considering the pen is melting plastic yet it's not too hot when it comes out and completely safe for children to handle. The plus side of this for me is that you can charge it up and you're not limited to having to use it near a plug socket. This also makes it portable for taking on travels and using wherever. You can get some great results and the possibilities are endless. It comes with stencils for you to create the Robot on the box etc and my daughter has had a lot of fun making various buildings and things as well as that robot. She is 9 and it's easy for her to change the cartridge herself to make multicoloured creations. It does use them up quite quickly though so I do think if it is something she wants to continue using we are going to have to keep a couple of packs of filaments in - shame these are so expensive though.Great fun, easy to use and opens up a whole new 3D craft world for adults and children.

What a fantastic product this is. This is my first introduction into the world of 3D doodling and I can honestly say it's great fun and brings out my and my grandkids creative side. We have had everything from monsters from the deep to mobile phone holders. The pen is aimed at younger children from 8+, but with supervision my six year old grandson has use it with little help from me, this is mainly due to the fact that the plastic can safely be touched with no chance of burning. The plastic hardens very quickly allowing kids to literally draw in the air with only one speed and one temperature. The plastic is made from food grade materials so isn't harmful to the environment. The set is however very expensive and the box it comes in is really small. I have given it five stars because it really is great fun. The set come complete with 3Doodler 3D Pen, 8 Mixed-colour Packs of Eco-Plastic, 8 Unique Doodleblocks, Micro-USB Charger, Activity Guide. I have purchased extra Eco-plastic, which is easily available from Amazon, as I know that the kids and I will continue to have fun with this product. The set comes with 360 days FREE replacement policy and unrivalled 24-hour global customer service, so no hassles if things go wrong. This is a super product, easy to set up and use, therefore it's 5* from me folks.

3Doodler start is a great creative toy which my 8 year old daughter has really enjoyed using – she describes it as “fun!”. My husband did need to show her how to use it the first time but then she was happy using and refilling it on her own. There is ample documentation with ideas for things to make.Doodle box templates are provided for some of the ideas, but not for all, which is confusing, so we just made these freehand and rested them on cardboard. The instructions also showed colours e.g. pink and brown, which were not provided in the box. My daughter found this disappointing. As a parent, I like that it comes in a small box which can be tidied away and taken out another day,and am sure we will get good use out of it over the years. It is robust and easy to recharge with a USB too.It is very expensive, and refills will add to that cost, so I would only recommend it for an age 8+ child with very good dexterity who is keen on art and able to focus for long-ish periods of time. We’ve had it for about a week, and my daughter keeps going back to it. In particular, she likes writing 3D “signs” and wants to give her creations as gifts to her friends at school.RH

This set comes with the doodle pen, plastic refill straws, usb cable for charging the pen, activity guide and doodle blocks. There are plenty of ideas and stencils /templates to follow or just to give your imagination a jolt. There are plenty of the plastic straws to last a while and make plenty of models, to buy a replacement set is £29.99 so this is not a cheap hobby .I have used an adult pen before which could burn if not careful. This one is designed with children in mind so they cannot burn themselves and there is no trailing cable plugged into the mains as this is charged with the USB,The ideas and projects for this pen are endless. I have used it with the children and the most popular model by far is making animals, and faces. Not always recognisable but they have had fun trying and practice makes perfect. This set is great fun, good for the imagination, hand eye co ordination, dexterity, and a hobby to keep the kids busy over the winter months when outside play is short. The set has been made and designed really well, it is made to a high standard with children in mind, it is very expensive though so it's best to be sure that it will be used a lot.

Our only previous experience of 3D pens came in the form of some much, much cheaper pens that gave out an oozing plastic that was half plastic, half glue, went everywhere and was ultimately a bit rubbish. They were cheap though. This kit is a very different proposition. This is the business. The pens plug in and heat up the plastic which they then extrude. You can use them to create some really clever designs, in 3d. It's not quite as simple as it looks, and you do need some practice. or, rather, you need to let your daughter smack your hand away and say LEAVE ME ALONE DADDY, I CAN DO IT. But the end results are pretty impressive.Three things though. 1) The price. This is really expensive. No getting away from that 2) the refills are expensive, too. Amazon sells the refill kits but they're not cheap. 3) the box is deeply unimpressive for the price. If I am paying £135 for this, then I want a box that looks way more impressive than this one does. So if you were going to buy this as a present, be warned - this child will not be blown away by packaging. But when you get the hang of it, it's brilliant. Works really, really well

This 3D doodler set is a very good idea, works very well and is very safe to use as although the plastic is melted in order to enable it to be transformed to a malleable state, this is done at a safe temperature so no risk of burns if you should come into contact with the melting plastic. It's also a cleaner process than it sounds as this takes place within the body of the instrument used for applying the plastic, coming out of the nozzle at the end.You do get quite a lot within the box (as pictured) there's just two main considerations I'd say. You do have to have a reasonable competency at art as once the stuff comes out and is applied to card, whatever, after a short period of time it is no longer useable. You can't rub it out and try again, the solution solidifies and that's that. Also connected to this you need to do a bit of planning in advance. Avoid the temptation to make it up as you go along for the same reasons. It's harder to adjust any mistakes once the substance is in situ and it is very expensive so the less waste the better. Very effective and creative designs can be achieved though with a bit of patience.

This is the first time I have ever used anything 3D and it's really quite good. To use the pen you simply press to turn it on, wait until it's warmed up and then feed one of the thin pieces of coloured plastic into it. The set comes with eight different coloured packs of plastic so there's a nice amount of choice to start off with. When your plastic is ready you just simply start writing or drawing with the pen.I think that to do it right requires lots of practice and I also wasted more plastic than I would have liked, but I managed to write my little boy's name and to do a colourful butterfly on my first attempt. I did send myself funny with concentrating on it so much, but that's my problem, not the pen's!The instruction book is really useful and gives several templates (I'm dying to try the Eiffel Tower but think I need more practice first). There are some stencils to help make a design that is not freestyle. All in all it's a fun item and one which is definitely worth the cost if you enjoy creating attractive 3D pictures.

After doing some research, I realised this device has a lot more potential than I was going to give credit. The idea of a 3D pen, in the hands of someone with a modicum of artistic talent who knows what they are doing, is actually pretty awesome. The thing to remember is that it is a "starter" kit primarily meant to get you used to the concept of using a 3D pen in the first place. 3Doodler have resources for those wanting to tackle more ambitious projects, mostly available from the company website. Model of the Eiffel Tower, anyone? Entirely possible - if you want to download the stencil, and take the time and effort (and care) to follow it through.I deducted one star because although the concept is sound, and the device works, the rate at which it consumes plastic means you probably won't be able to complete a large project without continually getting refills (this I suspect is the same approach to making money as printer manufacturers - i.e. they turn the profit on the ink refills).

We have had a great deal of fun with this 3Doodler Pen. It is easy to use, stimulates creativity, and makes some really cool designs and knick-knacks. I love how kid-friendly this model is. It doesn't generate any uncomfortable heat and is completely wireless, which makes it especially easy for kids to use. This has provided lots of options for fun and creative artistic expression and will see many more hours of use.I would suggest paying attention to the age recommendation, not for safety reasons, but simply because of the pen's thickness. Once we knew it was safe, we let our 3 year-old use it and he had a hard time holding such a thick pen in his little hand (even our 7 year-old complained of its girth). With that caveat, I would highly recommend this for kids 8 and over who are looking for new options for colorful and creative artistic outlets.

The 3Doodler Start Super Mega 3D Printing Pen Set is a whole lot more impressive than it first seems, it does get expensive to use overtime hence a dropped star but the advancement in technology is impressive. A very good creative toy, initially some parental advice (I tested it before getting the low down from the kids) once up and running and getting the hang of refills, there are some great creative ideas to work on included.A simple device uses a standard USB charge system to keep the pen going and the refills are straight forward, if a little expensive as mentioned. Great creations for the creative member of my family, lots of fun and certainly an insight into the future.
